The low hanging fruit in this is a valve cover gasket leak, which will vent a burnt oil smell into the cabin. But this is very easy to diagnose; you just look at the edge of the valve cover on the exhaust side for evidence of a leak. And unless the leak is very bad, it's an odor, not a strong, overpowering fume that will knock you out.

The windshield story is just BS if you ask me, because the car literally draws in air from right in front of the windshield and into the passenger compartment, so BIG DEAL if the windshield isn't sealed perfectly; it makes no difference.
