Damage at Dealer

Picked up my car tonight, in a rush, had it’s EGR recall done and a headlight washer jet and cover replaced and get home and there’s a big chunk of paint missing around the replaced cover and a scrape on the bumper.

Called them up and they said they’d study the CCTV to see if they can see anything. Absolutely 100% happened there, and not sure what is going to happen next. Is it going to be my word against theres?

Or do I now have to take photos of the whole car every time I take it to the dealers like I do for hire cars?

It will definitely need filling and respraying, about a 50p sized chunk of paint gone and a scratch.

Yes, I'd recommend taking photos any time you hand over the car to the dealer; I certainly do this myself.

In SoCal USA, the dealers (service advisors) take multiple photos of the vehicle using an iPad while checking in the vehicle.

Too much of a coincidence, scratch and chip right next to the work they did. Whatever the cctv shows, personally I'd be taking it further.

Agreed. surely they would have noted the damage on the inspection sheet when you gave it in.

Either way make a stink. Phone BMW UK and I'm sure you'll get this sorted.

If they'd scuffed the rear bumper then I can see how they could deny it but the fact they was doing work in that area is too much

Best of luck with this. Wish I had gone over my car now but it was taken round the back then was told I had to leave it. I had my little lad with me or else I would have.
When replacing the EGR, do they have to take any trim off? Just hope they use something to protect it as they're working on it.

Worst part is whoever did it must have known and just said nothing about it - not what you expect at a BMW main dealer. This has happened to me before and I did eventually get it sorted. I always photograph my car each time I hand it over and check it thoroughly before I drive away now. Hope you get it resolved.

Very true. Maybe they had dropped something but they'd surely know. It would be much easier if they owned up and fixed it, or booked it in to fix. I for one would have a great deal of respect for them and wouldn't make me dodge them like the plague again. There is a lot of distrust when it comes to dealers, this kind of thing just reinforces it.

If the dealer doesn't take responsibility, phone BMW Uk and make a formal complaint. Make sure that you get a complaint reference number from them.
I did this recently about some connecteddrive services which couldn't be enabled in my car and should have been there from new. Resolved eventually. BMW customer services really aren't very competent and I got pushed from pillar to post. You have to be persistent, insistent, and remain courteous
Good luck!!

I've done it for years: take the car to dealers / tyre place, take photos all round the car and make sure they see you taking photos.
I don't know if it makes them more careful but it'll certainly make the process easier if they do damage something.
