Mine was in for its first service today, along with trying to find the issue with the rear lights. When I picked up the car the service manager told me that there was a fault with the rear light unit and this had been logged in the car. Apparently there was a voltage drop which was causing the lights to come on.

The new unit has been ordered (apparently the last in the country) and the car goes back next Friday for it fitting.

I'll update next week, I won't hold my breath.

Just a thought, does anyone with a 4 series have this problem?

I don't. I have elec seats and adaptive cruise. Never had the issue (and I have been checking)

Edit: no lights at the side though (by rear grab handles) The 4 just has one in the middle centre or the roof - like at the front.

Yea the F30 has just the middle light too.

Very interesting if no 4's have it! I wonder if I can trade mine in early for an F36!

Oh cock!

I actually think I'm going to disconnect the done light, no one ever sits in the back so I don't really need it.

Ooh ooh, collected the car after the new light was fitted ......

Made fk all difference.

What's annoyed me the most is they haven't even driven the car anywhere. They've just fitted the part and assumed it would fix the problem.

Rang up and moaned, booked back in for next Thursday. Lol

Just wondering if anyone has found a solution to this problem. The dealer has admitted that there is a known issue but can not give any idea of when a fix will be available.

They suggested I speak to BMW customer services but they had even less information. They have not even bothered to reply to my last email. This is getting very annoying to say the least.

I know there's a PUMA case regarding it and the last I read on it (master tech showed me the case) they're waiting on a new module to be made. It mentions there's a short circuit somewhere.

Mine goes in for its third service on Tuesday, which will also be the third time I’ve got them to look at this problem, it really is getting fecking ridiculous now!

Has anyone found any home made solutions for it? At this time of year it annoys the hell out of me so much that I'd quite like to just disconnect it completely or cover it over.

Some people put black electrical tape over it apparently.

Yes I might do that, probably the easiest to fit and take off when needed

So I finally got a reply from BMW customer service today. They are now saying the issue is not a defect!!!

"Good morning Simon

Thanks for your reply - I appreciate your frustration towards the amount of time it's taken to resolve the issue.

Currently, the issue with the interior light is not recognised by BMW as a defect but we’re aware of the problem. A PuMA case is raised at each BMW Centre, as part of the required process while BMW Germany are still in ongoing investigations as to the cause. With this in mind, your local Centre has been advised of the process BMW UK want them to follow when they’ve been made aware of the customer concerns.

Unfortunately, there is no further point of escalation within BMW UK or Germany. But, I can assure you that the technical case is being looked at and BMW Germany are currently working towards a solution.

I know this wasn't the answer you were hoping to hear and I'm sorry to disappoint you.

Kind regards

Rob

As it's part of the design, can you ask them to update the manual with the situations in which the light comes on, and what benefit that gives the driver?

In my reply back to them I did say that as it's not a defect they must think that either:-

a) I am imagining it.

or

b) It was designed that way.

I'll let you know which one it is!!!

Got my car back today. Dealer confirmed the puma case and said to email BMW customer services expressing my disappointment and concerns over safety issues as the light is distracting etc.

He said to email, mention the puma case and ask for your vehicle (quote your reg) to be added to the list.

The more people that complain the more chance of them actually caring.
