320d performance power kit.

Hi All,
I have been thinking about having the PPK fitted to my 320d, dealer has quoted 848 fitted, sounds like good value, kit is new intercooler and ECU. Does anyone else have one fitted and if so are you happy with it?

Regards.

Not had one on a F30 but had it on a E90 320D and it was best thing I ever did on that car. Gave the car a good bump from 177 to about 205 in my case.

Low range torque and smoothness improved,no more flat spots etc. But still kept good fuel economy. Definitely worth doing if car is a keeper and you are happy with 4 pot derv.

I wanted it on my 2016 LCI 320d but they said it wasn't available for the newer engine in the LCI.

Fairly modest power increase for the price (about 16bhp) but keeping your warranty in tact is a major plus for it.

Was considering it, but instead waited for my cars warranty to run out and remapped it for more than double gains.

Well the car is 3 yrs old in April, plus I'm keeping it for at least another 5-6 years so should I consider getting it chipped? What puts me off about having it chipped is that is my car has service pack and I think at 848 fitted the PPK is really good value? What chipping etc would you recommend?

I used a local guy down south, but if you have the Service pack then remap might not be a good idea so it doesn't void it.

Plenty of mapping companies around offering like 45-50 bhp and 60-70nm torque gains for 250-400!

From what I know on an MPPK you will get like 25 bhp max and 30-40nm.

Iv got service pack and my cars been mapped with no issue come service time. Don't forgot it's Bmw who pay the dealer so in the dealers eyes why would they refuse to service it and loose money because it's chipped.

I asked my local guy to remap my 320d 2014 and he quoted 599. He normally does for 250 but said my bosch cpu will need to removed and his comments were: "we can do it but we charge 599 to do these ecu's as a very high risk of damaging them because we have to open them with heat - extra 40 bhp"

Kinda put me off

I had a PPK fitted to my F10 520d which I ran for 3.5 years. Overall I felt it was a worthwhile upgrade, specifically the improved performance higher in the rev range made fast overtakes less stressful. I did put it on a rolling road (only) afterwards and it recorded 224bhp from memory, but as with all rolling road data, take that with a serious pinch of salt. They aim to please...

I would say that it does not turn a 20d into a 25d engine. The low down performance is pretty much unchanged. It only really wakes up as the revs rise. When I went to collect the car, which was the first kit the dealer had fitted, the body language was interesting. They had test driven it themselves and I don't think they were impressed. I think they half expected me to drive it for half an hour and come back to question them. But I imagine they had just driven it normally, where it would be easy not to notice the difference.

I had a chat with someone who had a PPK fitted to a 330d, and he viewed it in much the same way - a good improvement higher in the rev range, but it doesn't turn a 30d into a 35d. The low end is still missing.

Personally, I value the warranty, and the fact that even up to about year 6, BMW will make a major contribution, so on that basis I would choose one over a non-BMW solution where you take your chances. I don't doubt that you'll get more bang for your buck elsewhere, so you have to ask yourself, do you feel lucky

And don't forget that you can sell the old ECU to recover some cash - only 50 in my case though. Don't think anyone wants a standard intercooler.

Good advice JD thank you, that's my thought about the extended 6yr warranty, a,so insurance company may be more lenient as its a BMW kit?

All ECU's need opened up to flash - if BMW themselves can flash via the OBD port is another matter looking at the above they just replace the ECU.

They typically need removed, opened up removing glue, put on a bench put in flash mode and wrote to in RAW format which is about 15-30mins process, the reverse of the above.

I don't think insurers differentiate between BMW and non-BMW power upgrades, except for BMW's own insurer who don't load the premium at all for the official PPK I believe. In my experience all other insurers ask is by what percentage has the power increased - they are looking for the official figure.

Even if you don't extend the warranty, BMW tend to pay a very substantial part of major failures up to about year 6. A complete engine failure out of warranty would probably cost you circa 2k if the car has full BMW service history. What happens if the car has been chipped, I don't know, but I imagine that BMW will take a very close look before they make such a substantial contribution.

It's fitted to my f33 420d (was a 184) & yes I'd say I'm happy with it. Finally got to drive the car in Germany the other week & noticed a decent difference to my old e93 320d (184) when accelerating at 3 figure speeds

Try someone like superchips - cheaper and offer a warranty

That price seems a little high for a privateer

Your BMW warranty will be void with any remap other than BMW gains with a PPK, but yes their will be a insurance rise.

Your only in Surrey, come down to Pompey and use TCM Tuning.

What spec is your current 320d, 184bhp?

I have the MPPK fitted to my 335i, gives an extra 34 bhp according to the sheet. Not alot compared to a remap but it doesnt affect the warranty.

I have red your thread couple weeks ago and tempting but thinking about the car I have not had issues with power and where i need quick boost I just press paddle shifter and downshift.

I have RAC warranty with full car value claim limit for 5 years and really can't afford to loose this.

Looking at PPK iam guessing this over 1k price job?

PPK seems to be around 800-900-1000 fitted. Depends what dealer, some quote less than others.

Probably better to put the 850 towards upgrading to a 330d!

Interesting comments guys.

Years ago I test drove a F31 pre LCI 320d xDrive PPK and didn't notice much of a difference from my E90 320d 177...

However, I wasn't thrashing it at all. Just checking out xDrive on a wet miserable day...

Changing the ECU and particularly updating the intercooler will help with high rpm hot charges and likely to come into play when pushed hard, as mentioned above.

Though, as @Teaston says... For almost 1k you spent, you could be moving towards a 30d... This is power and torque everywhere, not just up the rev range...
