So can you offer more advice to MustangNZ re his question on the base system? Might be useful for others.

@MustangNZ step by step guide by shawnsheridan
You can get download links for the software on the coding section of the forum.

Great ideas here: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1248308

and here: Base Audio Subwoofer Upgrade http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1428622

I have heard the Bav Sound Stage 1 and it is a decent bit of kit if you do not want to add on an aftermarket amp or code but it leaves more to be desired.

The base system is heavy handed with the eq because there is no separate amp the bav speakers still do good but will not be to everyones taste without proper correction. Most will end up wanting more and add subs with amp. Adding or changing tweeters upfront and door mids is a good start. Build on it from there if need be.

What are your system goals? More clarity? More bass? Both? Do you have a set budget?

There are so many plug and play options now: Rainbow, Focal, Bav Sound, Gladen, MB Quart, Daytona, Eton...

Amp wise. Do not want DSP? I suggest the JL XD 600/6
Wish you had gone HK? Bimmer Tech amp with built in DSP... Mosconi... Audison...

To make your life easier you may require a harness and you can order one from Technic PnP should you choose to add an amplifier:

https://technicpnp.com

In conclusion:
- Base audio needs tweeters
- Mid range is not the best
- Lacks bass
- Heavily eq'd and underpowered
- Coding Hi Fi alone will not fix it

The fix:
- Tweeters a must
- New mids a must in front
- Amp of sorts to breathe life into the system
- Hi Fi coding
- Better subs under the seats or a large sub in the back

My suggestion:
- JL c2 or c3 tweeters
- Bav Sound or Eton mids
- Rainbow or Eton subs under seat
- Arc Audio KS 125.2 BX Mini 2ch to power the subs as a minimum.
- Tweeters and mids require power so you could go up the Arc Audio range or look to another six channel amp such as the JL mentioned above.

Hope that helps.

So people with the full hk setup have you leave the b&o dsp in place? Do you find it better?

Does it disable the centre speaker (in front of the Sat nav screen) or was it never used?

Thanks

Left my B&O on.

Expanded changes phasing and gives a live effect. So less of the centre is being used.

Studio mode is allegedly as the artist intended for the music to be listened to. There appears to be more centre channel use.

Whereas with the HK you have logic 7 on or off.

I prefer expanded mode for most music. It has a nice surrounding effect with clear detail. I swear I can hear things in music I have not heard before.

Went over to see McBeemer today to code some stuff for him and I stumbled on the Bowers and Wilkins menu. (I coded the wrong menu when trying to do the B&O)

There were five, or so, different DSP settings but when we tried them it seemed that there was only a discernible difference between the first two.

If anyone else wants to try and see it's:

HU_NBT_EVO> 3000 HMI > HIGH_END_AUDIO_B_UND_W > Change to Volle_Insz

Not really, I stumbled upon it by accident. I just search in the ncd file for Audio and came across the Bowers and Wilkins settings first. They are almost exactly the same as the B&O. Difference highlighted in red

B&O Settings: HU_NBT_EVO> 3000 HMI > HIGH_END_AUDIO_MENUE > Change to Volle_Insz

Bowers & Wilkins Settings: HU_NBT_EVO> 3000 HMI > HIGH_END_AUDIO_B_UND_W > Change to Volle_Insz

Got my iCar adapter and BimmerCode this weekend and coded a few bits including this. Initially I was quite impressed. As other mentioned, there seems to be extra notch of bass depth and detail over HK.

But I am struggling to find EQ settings that create an overall sound I like. I tried JLR1969's (thank you), but find these a bit bright and lacking in bass for my taste. When I set up HK, I started with quite a neutral sound, then dialled up the treble frequencies a little to give a crisper edge. I then dialled up the bass frequencies, but aiming for weight and punch rather than bone-shaking or muddy bass if that makes sense.

So far I am really struggling to match what I perfected for HK. I know everyone's taste is personal, but sometimes a starting point is useful. Anyone else happy to post up their settings? Darth Helmut?

Cheers

Thanks for this. I'm aware of it and used it as the start point for my HK settings. Are you saying you've replicated this for the B&O config and found it works well for that too?

No, tried the Glenn settings and it still doesn't do it for me. Just a lack of attack compared with HK. Going to code it back. Erm, can someone remind me of the original setting in MENUE...?

What did you not like about the B&O setting if you do not mind me asking?

I think your views would make for a balanced review in this thread.

There was mixed feedback in the original thread as well. Would be interesting to know.

I lost count of how many suggestions there are for eq. There were some specific ones on the F10 forum for B&O but I found them to be heavy handed with the bass.

Of course. I've owned some entry level hifi separates over the years, so I appreciate decent sound, but I'm not an audiophile by means. Hopefully my description will make sense.

Firstly I should say that I can appreciate why others like the B&O. I noticed some detail that wasn't there in HK, especially when stationary or driving at lower speeds. The bass is also very different. There is more of it, but in a very specific way - depth and warmth, rather than punch/thud if that makes sense? Overall it feels more of a natural and balanced sound.

My issues with it are part personal preference and partly about suitability for a driving environment. For me, the sound is too laid back. I listen to a variety of music, but biased to rock, indie and some pop. I don't just whack up the bass or treble to the max, but I do like a clean, immediate sound with drive/attack. This is more important to me than the absolute last level of detail. Especially in a driving environment, and in a car like the F series with relatively poor refinement.

I tried lots of different settings on the B&O to create the 'attack' I was after, but found that it just ended up making the sound woolly or tinny. I think the B&O maybe works better with only subtle EQ tweaks, which is fine if you like that sound. I don't - I find it a bit 'meh'. For me, the HK responds better to moderate to high EQ changes.

I hope this helps. As others have said it's personal preference, but I'm happier back with the HK even if I'm in the minority!

After reading what mcoops had to say I feel I definitely want to give The B&O code a shot. Thanks for your insight man!
