There are bands into which your speeding offence will be put - and the punishment fits that band. Of course if it is a human filling in the form they can use discretion to record it at a different level....

Then if it is at a level when it goes to court judge has suggested punishments but can use his discretion.

Some of us study these things when we think we may have been caught....

I was about to say, yes - lots of holier than thou attitudes, but not yet......

on the plus side - lucky its not 91. then it coulda been much worse!
well, funnily enough, my approach is usually to keep it within limits, accelerate up to a speed and then coast back down and they got me just after the peak of my burst, which is why it's particularly annoying, but as I said, guilty as charged.

I knew there was a benefit to not owning a 440i

the 340i wasn't bad, it's the m3 the encourages you to do bad things. and things get bad very quickly :/

literally a dot in the distance, spotted the van straight away as I'm always looking out for them, slowed down and thought I was ok, evidently not!

Been here as well, but few years ago now

Caught doing 65 in a 30 zone. 3am in the morning and was a dual carriageway, both sides of the road was airport run way ( basically not your 30 zone out side a primary school when kids come out )

It went to court and I was given 350 fine, 28 days ban

No points but a black mark on the driving license say DIS for 28 days, which you have to report to insurance for years and years

Good luck mate. Just don't ask the court for a bigger fine and no ban the judge went totally MENTAL on me....YOU CANT COME IN HERE BUYING OR MAKING DEALS he said

Essential IMO. Depending on the menu options you select or disable it will give a lot of false alarms, the most common being camera vans. What the unit alerts you to, of course, are registered locations for camera vans not the actual presence of a camera van.

Depending on where you live and travel to the warnings for accident black-spots, congestion charge zone boundaries, schools, etc, can all be useful at raising your awareness of what's ahead - that's not a lecture , they can be genuinely useful.

You were just unlucky. Plenty of people exceed the limit for short bursts - it's a far safer way to overtake (reduced TED) than creeping past a line of traffic at +5mph. Yet another example of binary law enforcement without the benefit of situation or context (but difficult to argue against at +29mph). I wonder whether the driver at the front who was causing a tailback on a clear NSL road was done for driving without due care and attention...

Indeed. 0 to jail in about 8 seconds!

The way it accelerates in the upper reaches rally does mean that a few seconds of inappropriate throttle application has serious consequences.

I got caught doing that about 18 years ago, and got 3 pts and fined a weeks salary, so looks like punishment rates have gone up a fair bit, which I hadn't fully appreciated.

At a works H&S event a number of years ago they had a camera van on display. The police operator told us that be the time you've seen the van you're already caught. Almost no point in slowing down.

They're able to get you from 1000 or 1500m away I believe.

That's why I've had the road angel for some years now, and have plenty of advance warning.

Frustrating - feel for you... It almost seems since having the M3 I keep ending up behind people that are just plain inconsiderate (doing 40 on 60 etc. - often the sort that carry on doing 40 in a 30) - it is very easy & safe to nip past but an M3 puts you at the kind of speed you were doing before you've even past them! These vans seem to often be looking for you a long way off so it really is too late once you clock them no matter how alert you are... I had one do me on a dual carriageway from 800 metres - it was so far away you couldn't make out the reg on my filthy number plate so they took another as I went by but used the speed from the distant one as I'd clocked them & slowed. I'd only just fitted a new Snooper at the time which made it worse!

Trouble is even if you disable all the radar/laser detection etc. (as you get so many false alarms) you still end up almost zoning out from the alerts as there are so many temp camera locations these days. I really only find my Snooper any use for reminding me which gantries have the cameras in on motorways...

I guess it serves as a reminder to all of us that any time you speed you take a risk of being caught. I would be amazed if there was anyone on the roads that has never exceeded the limit - as there is simply no logic to the limits. Near me we have 30mph limits on modern wide straight roads with no junctions , segregation for pedestrians/cyclists etc. (people used to hate me driving my sons car along there with a black box on it) vs 50/60 mphs past hamlets with blind driveways where you really shouldn't be doing more than 40mph - it is just pure chance whether you are unfortunate to be caught - someone I know was done at 32mph in a 30 - suspect we've all done that but just didn't happen to do it while the police were running a zero tolerance campaign...

I assume a ban would have a greater impact on insurance than taking the 6 points so would be interested to hear what you decide on which I guess can quickly be confirmed by experimenting on Confused.com or similar

Some were mistakes, some were taking a chance and getting caught. But I used to drive 25k plus miles a year, I have probably done 750k since I passed my test - shit happens and I would never say I have never deliberately or accidentally been a bit naughty...

But knowing your weaknesses comes as you get older
So, here's the million dollar questions...

a) Did your previous experiences cause you to change your driving after them...

b) How will this experience (and you have the considerably less fun bit of the experience still to come, granted) affect your driving in future...

Whilst I am not sympathetic, I am not baiting you, either, nor passing judgement (that is for the Court)... I do not know you and I was not there when the alleged offence was detected (albeit you seem to be freely admitting it)...

To be honest, I am genuinely interested in how this particular experience might impact on your future driving... It is a particular interest of mine...

If you are at all interested, my views on NYCC enforcement (and the wider picture) are clear in the thread currently running in "off topic", BTW...

Along stretches of the A303, the 'second motorway' to the South West in case you don't know it, my Road Angel gives camera van alerts seemingly every 500-1000M. In many of the locations (where the Road Angel range to warning has reached zero) there isn't even a lay-by or bridge which makes me think that the Police have carpet bombed stretches of road with registered camera van sites just to act as a deterrent.

Sounds a bit conspiracy theory, but you never know.
