reamaing service mileage for engine oil not accurate

Just wondering if anyone has experienced when the remaining service mileage is not accurate.

My car was serviced by the main dealer for the engine oil service in November 2018. When I picked up the car back then it was showing 19,000 miles or 11/2020.

Over the last couple I weeks I have seen the aremaining service dropping and today it's now showing 15,000 miles remaining for the engine oil.

since the car has been serviced it was only covered 700 miles and I don't understand how it's dropped by 4,000 miles

Maybe it's based on usage - i.e. lot of short hop journeys vs. long motorway drives?

I wouldn't panic at this stage, monitor it, as it is CBS. Could hold the mileage or reduce much more slowly, as more miles are added.

Is it the first oil service, or a higher mileage engine? Can be influenced by how much contamination is in the engine, how quickly that changes the new oil condition.

If it simply keeps falling, then there will be some issue with the sensing.

Unless it's changed the CBS is just based on fuel used. Lots of start / stop journies use more fuel (and cause more wear) for a given mileage than long economical motorway runs. i.e. if the oil says 15000 miles remaining and you do 1000 miles of motorway driving it will say 14000 or perhaps more. If you do 1000 miles of city driving it might drop to 12000 even though you've only driven 1000. I'm not aware of anything more sophisticated that actually measures contaminates or viscosity.

Current oil condition sensors do have a oil condition monitoring function, along with level and oil temperature.

Quote:
Oil condition sensor

The oil condition sensor increases the function range of the thermal oil level sensor. The oil condition sensor measures the following variables:
* Engine oil temperature
* Oil level
* Engine oil quality

The engine management system evaluates these measurements. With the oil condition sensor, the electrical properties of the engine oil are also determined. These properties alter when the engine oil shows signs of degradation and ageing.

I do lot of short journeys (< 10 miles) and my figures dropped dramatically to the extent I wished I had signed up to the service pack!

When mine was last serviced it said I think 17000 or 18000 until next service

About 8500 miles later it is still saying 15000 but my journeys are generally long and I do very few short journeys

So all it is doing is adapting to your style of driving

It can only ever be a best guess as your usage of the car might change anyway

Nothing to worry about

Takes account of a number of factors - I notice it drops quicker in winter than summer too - related to your fuel input, if your economy is down because its cold it directly reflects in the miles to service.

Ive done 9,000 miles since collection - had 2,500 miles left on car when I bought it AUC, had it serviced, has dropped 3,000. So 9,000 on the year for 5,500 CBS reduction.

I do very few short trips, every trip I try to get the car up to temp and it helps.
