Do I need to code (register) my battery after charging?
Hello,
I have finally got my F30 from the USA a few weeks ago. The battery was extremely low so I started the car using the second car. Unfortunately, it was still low. So I put this battery out of the car and left for a night in the garage to charge it. Now I can start the car only by using the second car. Sometimes it works without that second car but definitely, more frequently it simply doesn't work. I would say 5% chances. What confuses me the most, the chances are higher if the engine is cold (for instance in the morning). The chances that it'll launch after 1 hour of driving are 0%. I'm wondering if the battery is already broken or do I need some extra coding because I put this battery out of the car and charged it outside the car? That special part of the vehicle (don't remember the name of it lol) which is responsible for charging it during driving seems to work properly as I can drive for 1 hour and nothing is happening. If the coding is needed, how can I make this work? I do have only Bimmercode application for now which I guess won't work for this purpose. Thank you F30-ers! --- Edit: I have mistaken the forum, it should be inside the N26 one. Is there a way to remove that thread from this forum? |

How can I code the new battery? Is it possible to make this work on my own? As I mentioned above I've just got Bimmercode for now but I guess it's not going to work for this purpose, am I right?

You should be able to register the battery with bimmercode but don't know for sure. The you tube videos I've seen involved using a laptop to register not sure what app is able to do it i would check the documentation.

Carly app can both register, and change battery capacity used if you buy a different capacity battery than what came from factory
And no, you dont need to register it just because you removed it, charged it, then put it back. It's the same battery only need to register when you replace with new Which you need to do cause yours is most likely done by the sounds of it

This is a good question though. If the battery is dead but then charged, does it need to be coded as if it were a new, fully charged battery?
I'm assuming not, as I charged my battery up last week and haven't seen any errors related to low/discharging battery. |

As I understand, between the IBS and the cars electronic system, they monitor the condition of the battery over its life and manage/monitor how the battery is charging and discharging as it degrades. By installing a new battery without registration, which resets the parameters to that of a new, fresh battery, the charging/discharging monitors think you still have the old battery installed and won't fully utilize the capabilities of the new battery. This may, apparently, shorten the life of the new battery.

Being that I'm a massive RC enthusiast and my batteries which are lipo for my 5' long helicopters cost $150 each and takes 2 to fly it for only 2 minutes on average... so I watch the condition of my batteries very closely... I test them everytime before charging for Internal Resistance... I've had brand new batteries that aren't worth a damn for all batteries are not equal.... the computer should note how the resistance is depleting over a period of time and determine life expectancy/ condition etc... so in essence of the fact it shouldn't really matter if it's a new battery or not... resetting the parameters shouldn't really matter for the period of time that determines life expectancy shouldn't take that long to figure out and I don't see how it could really shorten life expectancy .... but if it needs to be registered... so be it...

If you're interested in learning more about my issue, I finally bought a new battery and it's working. I used Bimmerlink app to register it - it was just 3 clicks and everything is working fine now. Honestly, I didn't even know there is some kind of registration needed for the new battery. Good to know

Good to know. Quick question, can you code with bimmerlink or do you need bimmercode for that? Can you register a battery with bimmercode or do yo need bimmerlink for that?

I'm not sure if I understood you correctly but if you want to code your bmw and register a new battery then you would need both BimmerCode and BimmerLink apps.

These cars draw so much power that the OE's needed to add big batteries but don't want to have to have them replaced ever 3-4 yrs.
