Buying private plates for children

I am thinking of buying a private plate each for my kids to keep on retention until they have cars, partly as a potential investment and partly as short plates are becoming harder to come across these days and will only become harder and more expensive in the future. Thoughts?

Imo put the cash in premium bonds, an ISA, shares, virtual currency or anything else like that.

I'm all for giving my kids a helping hand, but private number plates isn't even on the list of things they might need for a secure happy future.

And depending on how old they are, money invested in number plates might be worthless in the future. Who's going to care about number plates in electric driverless cars....?

Depends on how long you'd need to keep on retention until they can use them. Not sure how long it is before you need to renew.

I bought one for my 12 year old at the same time I bought back my old car to get hold of the 'plate for my 16 year old.

So we're sorted now, so long as we have no more kids.

My son has his eye on my two matching private plates when I am no longer on this earth. Will be a nice memory I guess.

I think driverless (autonomy level 5) cars even being technically possible, let alone legal and in mass use, is too far in the future to take into consideration currently.

Mrs hanchurch and I have matching private plates and for £700 I could get two relevant 5 figure private plates for the kids.

I have two plates on our cars for my boys. Don't have a plate for myself and neither does the Mrs.

We just use theirs and they will not get them until we're sure we have done a good job raising them.

They are really good plates and I just couldn't pass up the chance to get them for them. Would never be able to get them again if they had sold.

It's probably just me, don't really like private number plates in general, so not likely to think it's an important investment for children.

Exactly what I'm thinking they are good plates for the money

Do it. Just make sure when they do get them they understand not to sell the car with the plate on

My 6 year old is called Isaac and I know the guy that has the reg 1SAC, it's not perfect but hell its near enough.

He turned down over £50k for it a few years ago and considering I can't afford a new pair of trabs this summer my lad is going with the free reg he gets on his car, CBA putting my own reg on my chav white Audi.

I still believe this is something you need to start planning early for

'You have totally went about this the wrong way.

Find a decent cheap plate, then when son daughter born, register them with name on number plate.

Job sorted.

My daughter OBD653B was imensely happy when I suprised her with her cherished plate.

Friends and family where shocked I actually managed to get one that matched exactly..... Little did they know...'

Dont get it myself

People spending loads of cash just to have a plate that incorrectly spells their name

Can think of a lot of other better things to spend money on.

You wanted to get a plate for your son that basically says one sack, I sack?

£50k for a misplelled name is madness imo.

Alternatively, if you can't find a plate that matches your name without selling an organ...

https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-...ith-the-courts

Change your name by deed poll.

Have a scan over those plates for sale and pick a cheap one, then submit your new name by deed poll, job sorted.

Why pay £50k when Ernie only costs £250

Or sue your parents for giving you a name that prevents you having that personalised plate.
