It such a terrible waste all the people on here who clearly know more than the tyre manufacturers, it's a tragedy their expert knowledge is just going to waste when they should be working as highly paid consultants to the tyre manufacturing industry advising them that their efforts regarding winter tyres are a complete waste of time.

Thanks guys....got a little off topic, as with most posts....

Will give it a couple of weeks and see how the weather is. If it stays this warm, will change to summers a month early.

I'm still on Winters, I'll wait until the end of March before removing, it will get cold again.

Hahah busted!

I'm putting my summers back on this weekend. Even if it gets cold again I'll just have another excuse to pull the jack out

I get it of course, people will inevitably try and justify why they bought something, especially if it's need is disputed. We've all seen the comparisons and the tyre manufacturer-sponsored videos of cars driving up ski slopes in Finland (very impressive btw) but entirely pointless in this country. The truth is of course that tyre manufacturers want you to buy their stuff, even if you don't need it, because they make money from: a) you buying it; but crucially b) by taking you off the market for buying someone else's stuff thus removing the competition. And in the tyre business this second point is really important because we maybe buy tyres every two years or so?

Take for example this most recent 'unbiased' comparison by Autoexpress https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/access...r-tyres-tested which is unashamedly sponsored by Black Circles... and Continental Tyres, the two companies that stand to make money from you buying their stuff. Continental lock out the top spot for every flavour of tyre, which means we're not in the market for tyres for the next four years at least.

Interestingly enough that in that very comparison, the winning tyre, in everything except snow, was the summer tyre! Couldn't write it

I return to my earlier point, that winter tyres (otherwise known as snow tyres but rebranded for the UK because we don't have much snow) are *really* only for snow.
Seen plenty of conspiracy theorists on here, just not in a tyre thread.

Bloody experts, none of them know what they're talking about.

I say we all ignore them, because some bloke we've never met before, on a car forum, said we should. Good enough for me.

I wouldn't worry too much. I used to change mine over in April and that is what I intend to do this time. Winter tyres don't wear as much as people make out in my experience. I had a set of Michelin Alplin A4's which lasted three winters with very minimal wear. Michelin are brilliant for wear anyway and when I sold the car, I included the tyres.

They made my Summer tyres last longer as well and I had no issues driving or braking in snow or icy conditions. For me they were great peace of mind. So having gone from an xDrive to a 440i I bought myself some SottoZeros and they have been great. There is still plenty of grip from them even if it is very mild right now. It is only when they are very new and they haven't keyed in properly that there are serious issues with grip in warmer conditions.

I think the latest generation of them would be a better choice for most folk outside the north of Scotland for winter use.

I'd argue they're a better choice for most normal cars, and just use all year round.

Swapped back to summers on the 6gt yesterday after the sottozero3’s gave up on a roundabout last week.
Immediately noticed the increased tyre noise being back on the run flat summers even through the more cosseted 6 interior.

In my first car on snow I had no issue and we hold real snow and real cold weather back then. Just seams the eco summer tyres are cr*p in bad weather.

I go to work at 6:30 and get home around 8pm and it around 6-7c at the moment. Do winter tyres add grip?

Easy to test when you change over on a cold day. Summer tyres spin with a heavy boot and the winter not so easily. Brake hard and get abs with summer tyres and again winter tyres hard to trigger the ABS.

So you don't need a sky slope to test them after all.

You lot please keep your winter tyres on.....

So long as you do, sods law says the rest of us will be OK because it won't snow or even get cold enough to cause us a problem
