Extra USB Port and Extension

So, after 6 years, I finally removed the worthless phone cradle accessory that I ordered, paid extra for and never used.

Obviously, this clears up a USB Connection.

I want to use the modified lower dash piece with a USB Connection which would be right behind the drink holders on the lower dash. It’s the piece on the 2017+ vehicles with the wireless charging option.

Figure I need roughly a meter of cable (maybe less, but a meter to be safe).

Anyone know if BMW makes a cable this length with the correct connections to accomplish this?

There are different numbers because of the different dashboards and colors.

The black centerstack trim (plastic) has the number 51459393650
I needed the black centerstack trim with leather 51458071513

Gentlemen,

I've installed a Andream screen to add CarPlay and would like to an extra USB port linked to it.

I did buy the 51459393650, but it doesn't have the female USB connector in it. I'm struggling to find the cable (or the connector) that adds the female USB connector like the photo in the beginning of the thread.

Would any of you know which part this is ?

I believe this is the part you're looking for part number 84109229294. I thought this came with the lower panel when purchased new, but maybe not. A used panel should come with it though.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/323390252919

https://www.ebay.com/itm/154908938707

You will also need a male to male HSD USB cable part number 61119251703 which will connect the head unit to the trim panel USB connector.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/352884747757

Lower panel part number 51459393650 non-leather dash and black (should come with the USB connector, but should double check with seller).

I'm thinking without the hub data will work but with the hub you can also use for charging when coming from an MMI? You'd think the MMI would provide power also but I've never done this myself so not 100% sure.

I ordered the parts to set up the 2nd USB port in the lower dash trim. I ordered the parts below for future reference (rather from eBay).

I read in another thread that hooking up the 2nd USB port on your head unit, you have to code 6NS (Enhanced Bluetooth) as well. I'll use Bimmercode to enable whichever specific setting is needed if it comes to it. I just want the 2nd port for charging for passengers so hopefully this isn't necessary.

Will let you know how things go!

Got the new USB port installed! Didn't have to do any coding at least to enable charging which is all I want the new USB port for.

You have to remove the USB socket (the white plastic portion) from the square black outer case to plug it into the new lower dash trim piece by squeezing on the black clips on either side. The square black outer case is only needed if you want to add the USB port to your glove box.

You also have to shave one of the "fins" off one of the plugins on one side of the USB HSD cable, specifically the beige plugin (not the white plugin that plugs into the USB socket in the dash trim). See attached image for the little "fin" you have to shave off with the red arrow pointing at it so it's able to fit in the USB2 port in the back of your head unit (I have an NBT Evo head unit).

Be careful about resting the head unit, upper dash trim or radio panel on other things, be sure to set down a towel or microfiber towel to avoid scratching things. I accidentally scratched the area near the sport mode selector a little by setting my head unit down on it. Even though it didn't move around the weight alone left a faint scratch (may have moved a tad). Not a huge deal but we're OCD with our cars lol.

This sure isn't anything advanced or fancy, but before and after pics attached as well.

Is this retrofit just to have usb port exposed under the radio? Or can you retrofit factory wireless usb charging?

Also is this an extra usb port? Or you have to disable one usb port and move that port to this new port? You moving usb port from the cup holder to here?

Thanks.

This is to retrofit an extra USB port under the radio trim.

Cars with the wireless charging feature from factory (the charger that goes in the middle console) has this port added but other cars do not so it's just adding it using the extra USB port on the back of the head unit.

You can retrofit the factory wireless charger with an additional USB hub (if you wish to have the extra USB port under the radio trim also) but I didn't try that since the factory wireless charger sits in the middle console and isn't user friendly and it only works with smaller phones.

So since you hook up an extra usb port from your nbt evo directly to this usb panel, does it mean if you connect a phone, it will connect to nbt evo so if it’s an iphone, you can get wired carplay? If it’s android, you get wired screen mirroring? Or this usb port is charging only?

I didn't try that since I just wanted an extra port for charging. I think coding Enhanced Bluetooth adds some functionality to this new USB port.

Unfortunately I've gotten a new car (430i to 440i) since I posted these instructions so I can't test it out. I've been wanting to do this for the new car just haven't had time to do it yet.
