Help! I need experiences with intakes
I got a '18 340i xdrive and I wanted to get an intake. I haven't seen too much about this intake, but does anyone run it? Also drop what intake you have and what you'd recommend!

Short answer: Waste of money
You're paying $300 to gain some intake noise. The factory intake is already CAI to the grill. Personally, I'd funnel that cash to a tune like BM3, and you will be 1000x more happy. |

If you are looking for a little more power/efficiency try a drop in aFe filter. Intakes are for noise which is fine if that is what you are looking for. But if noise is a priority I'd put $ toward an axle-back exhaust like Remus, AWE, etc

+1 in agreement with other posters. I guess the question is why do you want an intake? Stock setup is not really an airflow restriction. There are better "bang for your buck" mods available. Plus, IMO, oiled air filters are more hassle than they're worth.

Yes, with oiled air filters you run the risk of the oil damaging the expensive sensors in the air intake system.

Has that definitely been established with the B58 engine? I have an N55 and there are definitely some intake airflow restrictions that are hit when pushing it with performance mods. From what I've experienced, the N55 intake restrictions are: 1) Stock airfilter. Solved with lower restriction aFe Pro Dry filter. 2) Stock airbox air inlet size. Solved with M Performance Intake with extra air inlet (outlined in red plastic), or by some, but not all, other aftermarket intakes. 3) Stock turbo inlet pipe has built-in restriction near connection to the turbocharger air inlet. Solved by the Pure Turbos Inlet Pipe. I don't know of any other that work because cheap metal inlet pipes stupidly duplicate the stock air restriction. Please see photos to illustrate my N55 comments. I don't know if these same issues, or others, exist with the B58 engine. Hope this helps! |

If you've had a chance to dyno before and after the M Performance intake box and aftermarket filter, I'd certainly be curious to see what gains you achieved. I actually modified my lower intake air box to simulate the M Performance version, but I was under the impression that it was mostly just for sound. Additionally, even if you COULD get something like +5hp, I just personally feel that spending $300 for that 5hp isn't quite worth it. But it looks like OP mentioned it was primarily for the sound, in which case, have at it.

I just pulled the baffling out of my bottom airbox to "give more volume". The only difference on the M and non-m is the lack of that baffling + the hole.
Catch22 with the hole is it sucks in hot air in stop and go driving which is counter productive. Nice thing about these torque target turbo cars is the DME shoots for torque numbers based on RPM, boost, temps, etc. So if the intake was restrictive, it cranks up the boost higher to gain the power back. Self heals itself if you would. |
