Engine (DME) - Error 123431

Need to help on this one. I went to flash BM3 to the latest map and checked for errors first. There are quite a few but the one that concerns me the most is "Engine (DME) - 123431 No description Available". I flashed to OTS map 4.4 which cleared all the other errors except for this one. Searching the forum and google for 123431 has only been seen related to wastegate problems and has been followed by a CEL. Anyone else experienced this?

Good to see others get that super annoying 801C15. Always with my agent plugged in.... Getting annoying.

Do you happen to have esys? I could walk you through reflashing all stock software onto your DME. Can't find anything on the code. Do you know what i-step your car is on?

not sure why 801C15 shows up since my agent gets fully powered off via a switch every time I use it. But it is annoying.

I don’t have esys, but I could definitely get it setup. I’ll google it and see how it goes, but before I do that I’m thinking it might be a bug with the latest Wi-Fi agent software. I never had this error even last month and I just update my app and agent and now there is this non removable error. I’ve sent a note to PTF to see what they say then I’ll look at esys.

Can I see I-step Level through the console or is esys necessary?

Thanks

So after talking with PTF they suggested I flash with a laptop instead of the wifi agent to see if the code clears. I didn't have one that I could disable firewall and antivirus with so I flashed back to stock via wifi agent and got a permanent CEL and new error code 123401 along with old 123431 both under DME and no description. I still could not clear either code and odd this would come up flashing back to stock.

So I flashed back to stage 2 and the both codes and CEL cleared. My concern now is that after looking up these codes on https://bmwfault.codes/ they both reference issues with EWG. Other than removing my OCC to dump the fluids I haven't made any physical changes since late June.

Two concerns:
1- is my EWG on its way out and any recommendations on how to check to see if it's ok?
2- why did BM3 suppress the 2nd code and CEL until I flashed back to stock? I asked PTF and they have yet to respond.

Edit: PTF confirmed that on stage 2 is suppresses CEL. This is kinda scary

Serge from PTF:
bootmod3 masks the CEL when on stage 2. When on stage 1 or stock tune, you'd have to manually turn it off in the map configuration.

would have been good to know this

After several back and forth exchanges with PTF I can confirm they are 100% suppressing the CEL code for all downpipes on stage 2 OTS maps whether you choose to enable it in the map or not. However, no one seems to be able to confirm if they are actually suppressing all codes that create CELs on the car. They are usually really good for support but I’ve gone in circles with 3 different people and no one will answer my question. Anyway I’m taking my car in to have the EWG checked because unbeknownst to me it’s been faulty for potentially up to 45 days with no CEL.

Exactly^^^^

I think codes were 100% being suppressed on my N20 before it bricked without warning.

I had no codes, then I had no car.

I spoke with Dzenan and he said that BM3 stage 2 only suppresses the CEL light in the dash itself and not the error codes in the DME. However, based on what I experienced there is the potential that codes are not being read correctly by BM3 so it may not be a reliable tool to trust when looking for errors. Best to have another ODB scanner on hand that you trust.

For my original issue of codes 123431 and 123401 after flashing to stock and back to stage 2 I can't get the codes to come back. Flashing back to stock again does not produce either code. I want to take it to the dealer to check but I don't have any codes they can dig into anymore.

I've looked up the codes on here and nothing much out there with details other than sspade fix his WG after an install he had done. Everything else lack details.

Should I wait for the codes to come back or should I take it to the dealer to investigate as its still under warranty without codes and say I hear a whine noise?

123401 - Electric wastegate, learning limit stop: Malfunction.

123431-Electric wastegate, learning limit stop: stop position (wastegate open) outside tolerance

Both codes have same details:

Your downpipe clamp isn't attached properly based on that last photo. It should sit at the 12 o'clock position otherwise the wastegate arm hits it.

So I would not worry about the phantom codes. When I flash stuff with esys or code things I get allllll sorts of codes. Funny thing is I actually SOMEHOW caused the thermostat to fail while coding. The good thing is it was a known issue so it was replaced under warranty anyways haha.

You may have been getting those codes due to a bad flash. Certain things were coded wrong on the DME causing the car to freak out. Coding it correctly with a reflash may have corrected that.

Lastly. HOLY SHIT WAIT WHAT THE LIGHT IS COMPLETELY MASKED ON STAGE 2?

That's really not great. I thought they masked ONLY downpipe related CEL triggers. This means on stage 2 you wouldn't see a CEL unless you just happened to scan regularly. That kind of kills stage 2 for me...

Thanks for the insight on the flashing and phantom codes. Sounds like lots of fun when coding. Car is back to stock until I can move my clamp out of the way of the WG. But I am unable to reproduce those errors either flashed or not right now.

Ya it’s pretty scary they suppress the CEL light on stage 2 without telling people. They justified it saying “most people on stage 2 have a catless downpipe so we turned off the light warning”. But the interesting thing is if you use their disable CEL for downpipe setting in stage 1 maps it’s doing the same thing. They are not searching for the downpipe specific codes that generate the CEL. Suppress all CEL or no CEL. Up to us to decide.

"Don't tune your daily driver" was the last bit of sound advice I got from my cousin who is a car mechanic in South Carolina. Sounds like common sense, wish I had listened.
