Safe to buy Homelink mirror upgrade on eBay?

Hi all,

I just purchased a new 2020 Sapphire Black BMW 420Xi M Sport (love it), but it doesn't come with the Homelink Garage Door upgrade package.

I checked with BMW and it is a costly upgrade ($1500). Part #: 51-166-821-263 (https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...80#51166821263)

Ugg. I noticed however that there are quite a few of these on EBay. However, I am nervous to purchase one of these, as I heard rumours of it messing up the rain sensors (and a host of other problems).

Any thoughts?

You might be better served asking in the G20 section, BUT, assuming that things generally operate the same as the F30: swapping the part in should be straightforward, it only needs power. Just make sure you get the mirror from your region, apparently European mirrors won't work on American cars, and vice versa. Also be sure that the mirror you're buying comes from a car with the same options as yours (aside from the Homelink), otherwise coding may be required.

A 2020 4-Series is an F3*, not a G2*.

Well, damn.

One more thing to throw up the stairs and hope it sticks.

I did this for our 2012 X5 when it was new. I actually had the dealer install it when I got it as I didn’t want to risk accidentally popping mirror mount off the windshield. They only charged $50 for install but I was on pretty good terms with my SA back then so I don’t know if that’s normal.

A cheaper, easier, and more ergonomic solution is just to buy a garage door opener from amazon and mount it on the door pocket. I wanted the built-in compass on our X5 though, so I went the mirror replacement route.

I purchased a mirror with homelink for my 328 back in the day. I simply swapped the mirrors and the homelink luckily had roughed in power.

Worked flawlessly - no coding required.

I've been a lot of thinking about this, and I think I am going to pass. I feel that the risk of a bad part is to high (might short out the alarm system, etc.). Maybe I am too paranoid.

You're being paranoid. This was one of the easiest and most straightforward swaps I ever did.

Just to reopen this thread with some thought. I must admit. Having the compass would be nice.

What features come this upgraded mirror (51166821263)
- Compass
- Homelink
- Dimming mirrors?
- Highbeam indicator?

And its a simple plug and play changeover?

Finally bought the mirror

I took the plunge and finally bought the mirror (51166821263)

Any tutorials on how to install? Can someone provide me some links (YouTube, etc.)?

One thing I will caution is to be careful as you dismount and mount the mirror. I was fucking around with my rearview mirror in my prev car once when I was 21 and ended up cracking the windscreen itself because I applied too much pressure to it. Sheepishly approached my parents for money because I didn't have $500 to burn back then. I doubt you will need that much pressure to swap this but just something to note no less.

Not sure what you mean by "high beam indicators" but I have the standard upgraded auto dimming mirror without auto high beams so it's just homelink/compass/rain wiper sensor. The rain sensor is separate of the mirror itself, but is mounted together w/ the mirror on the glass.

I'd imagine it would be pretty similar to the E90s, check out the video below:

No disrespect, but an E-Series is NOT the same as the F-Series.

Thanks KC340_F30. Was it just plug and play? Did you have to recode anything? What about the dimming and the compass. Do those work/need to be set?

I actually answered all those questions a few posts up.

This was a 10 minute modification. No idea how this thread still going, just do it - it was super easy.

Thanks again. Sorry if I see overly concerned. It's just with all the hassle of ordering (and potentially returning) through eBay, I just want to make sure that once the mirror arrives, it is smooth sailing to install it and enjoy it.

I went from a base 328 with no alarm, no compass and no garage opener to picking up a mirror for $100 with all the options. Slid the old one off, plugged in the new one and sure enough the car had power prewired therefore getting me the garage opener and compass fully functional. Alarm of course wasn't functional still but the other two options worked on their on with zero coding or other mods.

I do have an alarm on mine. Hopefully, this also won't require recoding.

I received the mirror today. Looks mint, but how easy is this to install though? Do I simply slide the other one off? I am scared to apply force to the existing mirror as I fear I may break the windshield. Any advice on how to remove the old mirror and install this new one? I agree though, it does like it's plug and play.

Just a note that I managed to install the mirror and everything works perfectly (Homelink, Dimming, Alarm, and Rain Sensor). Plug and Play! Just like KC340_F30 said

A million thanks to everyone
