3G Discontinuation Notice

Wondering if anyone else have gotten this email.
So this means going back to dealership for tech upgrade in order to use in car connected drive.
Seems like it'll also affect the nav traffic info. Wonder how much that upgrade gonna cost...

Interesting. I have a 16 F31 and have not received this email. I did just get an overall software update about two weeks ago. I wonder if it updates BMW system to 4G?

I have a 2017 330i, have both the Connected Drive app and the new My BMW one. I assume that means they have my email. I haven’t gotten this. My manufacture date was 7/17...is there a way to know if my car is affected?

I got my notice today from BMWUSA too.

If you’re car is eligible, the Technology Upgrade to maintain Connected Drive services is FREE. (nice)

Interesting. The second car in the family - 2015 BMW X5 - also received this same notice.

I drive 2017 BMW 440i GC with a build date in July 2016. Wondering if my car is affected by 3G discontinuation.

Oh cool! So do we simply schedule with local dealership to upgrade?

Thanks for the details. So what are the options for affected owners?

I just reread the email and searched up BMW 3G discontinuation. I'm guessing you need that email or mail to receive the upgrade.

5. Can a customer upgrade their vehicle to newer technology that would support ConnectedDrive/BMW Assist?
Not all BMW vehicles will be eligible for a technology upgrade. Customers will be notified via email or First-Class Mail about whether their vehicles are eligible for an upgrade or not.
6. I received a notice that my vehicle is eligible for a technology upgrade. What are my next steps?
If you received an email or postal mailing stating that your vehicle is eligible for a technology upgrade, please schedule an appointment with your local BMW Center to receive the upgrade, which will be free of charge.

You'd probably need an email or mail from BMWUSA in order to see if you're eligible to receive upgrade.

4G requires a hardware change. Blame the telecommunications industry for not making new tech compatible with old tech. However, since 4G went into service in 2010 BMW shares partial blame for not going to 4G years sooner.

True, but is there a way to see if your car already has 4G?

Yep. You'll need your eligibility letter from BMWUSA (email or postal mail). I’m guessing they’ll be upgrading the 3G modem to 4G…

So is the upgrade free? My email says I'm eligible for an upgrade. What will they update if any of you know?

I got the email but it states that SOME owners MAY be elegible for an upgrade. So unless I get a separate email or letter, I'm assuming I'm not gonna be able to upgrade.

Also, my vehicle is a 2016 LCI. I believe I've seen a 4G icon pop up on the screen at times? I have phone connectivity for emergencies and subscription. Does anyone know if this means I am unaffected?

Also the upgrade you all may have gotten OTA recently is to give you free extension for your subscription until the feb end of service date. It says so in the letter.

Update: called BMW of North America. They took my VIN and confirmed my 3G vehicle is elegible for free upgrade.

On my 2014 F15 (with NBT) my RTT subscription expired a month or two ago and I was not able to renew, it wasn't an option anywhere on the website. I emailed support and they said it was simply not available for my X5 anymore.

All BMWs with a built date on or after 07/2015 and beyond (03/2015 for the F22/23) has a 4G LTE telemetry.

BMW discontinued the 3G modem after this date.

I'm perplex on why the OP has a supposed 3G modern in a 2017 MY. Something is not right..

Mine was end of '16 and labeled as '17 model.

3G Discontinuation Notice

I just search that up too. Mine is NBT EVO ID5 but no touch control on screen or the rotary controller. Which I assume also contradicts with what you've mentioned?
