New 2016 BMW 340i Winter wheel question
Hi All,
Just purchased a new BMW 340i XDrive and the car comes with 19" M Double Spoke Style 442M Orbit Gray Mixed Summer tires. Does anyone know if the rims are staggered in size with the mixed tires, so 19x8fronts and 19x8.5rear? Reason I ask is I need to put winter tires on the car and am not sure if I should also go with mixed tires or straight setup? Any concerns with going 19" wheels for winter or should I be looking for some 18"? |

You're probably better looking for 18 inch wheels and winter tires as there will likely be more choices in that size versus 19's.

Go with 18's as you'll have way more clearance. Not to mention, cheaper tires and more options. I went with a square setup on my 335i, and I barely have a wheelgap when I put on my 18's. Here's a picture on 18's, my car is on stock xdrive height. Tires are Pirelli Sottozero 3, with 400M 18's 225/45/R18 I just noticed you're from Toronto as well, you will want to get 18's for sure then, running 19's in our kind of weather is going to cause some problems for you later haha. If you need wheels, I suggest you contact 05mdriver as I bought a 400M square set from him. |

You want a slightly taller sidewall to deal with potholes. |

Summer: Staggered 19s Winter 'Square' 18s
BMW and a lot of BMW owners generally recommend a 'square' setup (equal rim width, front and rear) with wheel size reduced to 18 inches.
=============== Here's an earlier message I posted in response to a similar question: Judging by the absence of responses, perhaps a lot of 335i/435i owners facing winter conditions have followed the "-1" route and downsized to 18-inch wheels. - reducing the wheel diameter by 1 in. (radius by 0.5 in.) means the sidewall will be roughly 0.5 in. higher if overall diameter is kept constant - the higher sidewall will be more compliant, which reduces the risk of bending or cracking a rim during 'pothole season' - winter tires on a narrower 18-in. wheel will be both cheaper and narrower than a 19-in. tire. - a narrower tire will perform better in snow and slush ('cutting through' -- with a reduced tendency to 'float over' or aquaplane) - I use a 'square' setup with 225/45-R18 winter tires. The winter tire is almost 2.5 in. narrower than the 255/35-R19 summer tire it replaces Here's my setup: 18-in. BBS-SR wheels with Continental WinterContact 830P tires. Since there's no snow in Toronto yet and temperatures remain well above freezing, you might consider ordering the BBS wheels, which may be available by January. Alternatively, SimplyTire.com in north Toronto offers a few replica wheel and tire packages for BMW. I bought the BBS wheels and Continental TS830P tires there (tire recommended by BMW -- '*' designation) |

I just bought 4 winter tires to fit on my 19 inch 442M wheels.
I have a 435i GC. Tires will be fitted tomorrow. I choose the Michelin Pilot Alpin4. Front and back tires have a different size, as my summer tires (225/40 and 255/35 - or the other way around, can't remember). It's a lot cheaper than buying 18 inch wheels and tires from BMW. Just saying. |

255/35-R19s versus 245/45-R18s ===> over 60 Months
Yes, of course it is cheaper. However, using the summer 19s involves a few disadvantages:
1. Tire size on the 19s (wide tread, short sidewall) is not ideal for winter driving, as noted in my earlier post. That may not be a big deal in Belgium but it can be in Canada (snow, ice). 2. Your summer tires will have to be removed/mounted repeatedly. That's not great for the tires. Not critical, but not great. 3. If you keep your car for, say, five years, the annual cost of changing and balancing the tires will come close to the cost of a set of 18-inch alloys. That, plus the higher cost of wider, 19-in. winters (vs.small 18s) means you will save little, if anything over the long term. |

18" square is the fastest smartest best option

Adding potholes, ices and unseen obstacles, 18" square is the smartest, faster, safest setup one can have. Recorded with my laptimer several 4.5s 0-60 runs on my winter Sottozero Serie II.... |

The higher sidewall is ideal for potholes. I'm in Minnesota, so I can sympathize. My summers are 20" and my winters are 17". I hate the look of 17s, but I have never blown a tire or damaged a wheel on a pothole, pressure ridge or when going over ice chunks.
For me, I try to run my summer wheels as long as possible. When the first snow hits, all of the tire shops get booked up quickly with everyone scrambling to get their snow tires on. Me? I just jack the car up in the garage and swap over the wheels in a half hour. In the spring, if I swap my wheels back to summers too early and a late snow hits, I can quickly swap back. Yes- it's happened. |

Just took delivery of a 2017 340i xDrive, 6 speed MT, M Performance I & II. Brilliant car. Sold a DD 2004 911 C4S, so any car following it would be a tough compare. Love the 340i with the MPPSK.
Living in Toronto, I've got to figure out a winter wheel set up. I'm considering replacing the 19' Style 442M wheels with 18's for summer and winter with either VMR 710's or Avant Garde M359's. Just love the CSL / competition look of the older BMW 359 wheels. Reason I'm considering running the 18's all year round is because: 1) I'd run 18's in the winter regardless 2) I can't find a VMR 710 or AV 359 set up that matches the OEM 442 staggered set up for summer. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong - but neither marque makes 19 x 8 or 19 x 8.5 wheels. So I'd park the 19's and just run 18's all year round with different tires. Question: If you've got the 19' Style 442 set up like I do, can you run the 18' 'Track Handling Package' tire set up without negatively affecting gearing ratios (etc) and fitting over the M Sport Brakes? That package has 18" X 8.0" FR & 18" X 8.5" and P225/45R18 Fr & P255/40R18. VMR makes a 18 x 8 and 18 x. 8.5 wheels, so I could in theory run those wheels with new winter / summer tires and get the CSL look I want. Thanks for reading...any thoughts/comments appreciated. Stock OEM Summer Set up: 19" Doublespoke Style442 M Orbit Grey Front: 19x8.0, 225/40 R19 Rear: 19x8.5, 255/35 R19 |

Took possession last month of a 340xi with M package I, II and track handling 18'. Will go with Michelin PA4 235/40R18 square, which was BMW's choice for previous e90 M3. Should be a blast with xdrive.

Nice, congrats H20, sounds like an awesome ride...so you're running the P225/45R18 & P255/40R18 set up in the summer and then the 235/40R18 square set up in Winter on those same rims?
ps. had a 2012 x5 35d...that thing was a beast. If a fighter jet and a tank had a kid, it would be that truck. |

Hello guys i need some help I just bought a 2017 BMW 340i drive m performance edition. It has the m brake blue calipers so I was confused as to what would fit. I'm looking at used tires so I don't want the hassle of taking people's tires and checking at a shop just to have them not fit.
Sorry to clarify I need winters lol |

Does TireRack ship to Canada or have a Canadian branch?
If you build a package there based on your vehicle specs (M Sport brakes is a criteria), all of the 18" wheels they recommend will fit.
