Hi, I don't have an F30 yet, picking up one this week. Been a few years since I go to my dealer as I get my E90 serviced at a local shop in Miami. I was charged $108 last week for my oil change at this shop. I think the N20 takes slightly less oil than the N52. Just curious what the dealers are charging these days for this service.

Please state your model and cost if you could please?

My dealer charged $89 for oil change and they also price match other dealers special if you can print out the coupon.

Nothing, I buy before at ebays and bring it with me to the inspection. Theres no reason that the dealer could refuse this practice.

If you change your oil at 7500 mile intervals instead of 15,000 or yearly, some dealers charge as much as $125 for an "oil service", but my local Independent shop only charges $85 using the same oil and filter products. For the "in-betweens" on my 2013 F30 and now for my wife's 2011 E88, I go to the Indy shop.

Free, but if you supply your own oil, they tend to charge you significantly less.

Dealers tend to overcharge for oil, especially if its synthetic.

Looks like the prices remain about the same for past decade, I think I have paid about $130 in years past so not much change...at $150 for an oil change one can save $100 DIY and get your hands dirty in the process.

I meant the United States in general. I do see that some ppl have quoted higher numbers similar to what we pay, but I'd say at least half of the responses have indicated ~$100 or less.

Here in the Toronto area, I believe they are all essentially $150 at the dealers. Even my local indy is $120

I do it myself with BMW oil and filter, for around $50 and since i use disposable gloves my hands dont get dirty Its not like other makes where removing the oil filter spews oil everywhere, its located on the top of the engine which makes it a very clean and simple change. Your best bet is to buy a case of oil and two filters at once that way you save on shipping.

This assumes that you have the time, the space, the oil drain pan and some way to dispose of the used oil, and a way of jacking up the front of the car to undo the trapdoor on the plastic undertray and remove the drain plug. And if you screw up and forget to put a new crush washer on the plug or don't reinstall it correctly or fail to lube the o-ring on the oil filter housing or any one of a dozen other requirements, you have no recourse if your car pukes oil everywhere or worse, runs dry. I'll gladly pay someone the $35 extra to do it in their garage using their tools, lift, etc., while I read car mags or watch TV in a comfy chair.

Thats fine if you want to do that Changing the oil is easy, i do it in the parking lot of the townhouse complex i live in. No jacking required, just use the ramps I got from the auto parts store. Theres no space required to do an oil change. Forgetting to put a crush washer is impossible unless you're sitting in a comfy chair reading a magazine while trying to changing the oil at the same time. Even if the crush washer gets left out, itll probably drip a little bit, but nothing to make your engine blow up. It would take alot more effort to screw something in wrong than it would to do it right. Although we all know lubricating the o ring in the oil filter housing is a good idea, your car isnt going to implode if you dont. it just makes removal next time that much harder. Disposing of the oil is easy, i drop it off at the mechanic down the road. Catch pans are like $2 at walmart so thats not a really big deal.

I understand some people for one reason or another dont like to do things themselves, but changing the oil is more basic than sitting for your drivers license test. Its nothing to be afraid of, the process is not much different from any other domestic car on the road. When in doubt, use BMW oil and filters you'll be good to go.

It's free in my country for up to 5 years/ 100000km...whichever comes first. Now i have 33000km / x3 2.0d... Just did my second oil and filter change.

I also bought extended warranty for 6 years/ 120000km for my x3...

I've been driving and working on cars for over 50 years - I'd say I've easily changed oil on more cars than your age in years times ten. I used to build racing engines and do all manner of engine rebuilds and modifications, so I'm very well-acquainted with what's required to do an oil change. When you grow up, you don't always have the time or inclination to jack up your $50K+ German performance car and drain/refill the oil and change the filter in your driveway or garage, especially now that you can afford to let someone else do it. It's one of life's rewards after years of hard work to achieve that status. I'd rather spend my time doing custom coding, detailing the interior/exterior, or doing some "spirited" driving in either of my BMWs.

As far as driver's license tests, the last one I took was about 10 years ago to get my motorcycle endorsement. I got through that in 15 minutes and didn't even have to wear gloves or clean up afterwards. So yeah, there are some mighty legitimate reasons for not wanting to "do it yourself".

Oh no i sense some butthurt haha! Does telling people in the internet that you've changed the oil before in other cars make you feel good? Does insinutating that you've achieved some magical status help you stroke your ego nicely? Relax keyboard commando! The OP wanted to know what oil changes cost, I gave him the DIY answer while you and several others quoted shop pricing. Either option is viable, no need to get all bent out of shape.
