A local clued me in. They were for plugging in engine block heaters. This was before synthetic oils, and without engine block heaters chances of starting your car at -20F were slim to none. I took the hint and put one into my van. Good thing I did, the day my bride and I left Minnesota on our honeymoon/trip to my next gig it was 20 below, and that was at ten in the morning.

They took many of them out once synthetic 0w oils were the rule, but you can be sure that they'll be going back in by 2035. Maybe not 480v fast charge outlets, but even 110v does the job, it just takes longer.
Twenty years ago one of my buddies who was originally from Minnesota, moved back home with his car originally purchased in Philadelphia.

He knew enough to have a plug-in block heater installed. He thought that he was ready for his first winter back, but one cold morning his car started right up with the block heater doing its job, but the car wouldn’t move.

The local garage towed his car. The mechanic chuckled when he heard about my buddy’s recent move. He said “Your car has that East Coast brake fluid that freezes up here!” He let the car warm up in the shop, replaced the brake fluid with a grade meant for extreme cold and he never had a problem again.

Won't be able to buy a gas engine car in a few decades. Get it while you can. Plus EVs are g*y.

Gas engines are gone in 12 years. You'll still be able to buy used gas engine cars, but not new.

Porsche is making efuel that is 0 emissions that works with standard ICE engines and Toyota is as well I believe. I wouldn't necessarily bet on EVs taking over.

Donunt media put out a video on it a few days ago actually. As of now, I wouldnt expect it to be accessible to the public anytime soon. Wayyy too little of it and way too expensive. Maybe in the future as the tech improves and other companies are able to help produce it... would be nice to have an alternative to moving into an EV in a few years.

For what it's worth: "Consumer Reports also named BMW the best overall car brand for 2023"

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/consume...cars-for-2023/

For electric: expect growing technical pains and requires some trip planning. You Dad should be fairly independent.
