BMW dealer is offering me $24150 trade-in value on my '18 330i. Seems too much to me?

I have a 2023 BMW X1 that is apparently on a ship already. It will probably be here within a few weeks.

I was planning to keep my '18 330i for now, so I told the dealer a couple of months ago that I didn't have anything to trade-in.

When I was talking to the BMW CA yesterday about the X1's shipping status yesterday, he asked me if I was sure about no trade-in. He said that they would offer me $24,150. I told him that I would think about it.

The car has a little over 62,000 miles with almost a couple of years of BMW's own extended warranty remaining. They know my car, since it has been serviced there regularly since purchase.

$24,150 seems a little high to me(can't believe I'm complaining about this). It also makes me very suspicious because they seem to really want my car for some reason. They obviously think that they can sell it for a profit. Should I try to sell it myself or ask for a higher trade-in value?

Simple, if you don't want to trade, then don't. 24,150 does seem a bit high because of the 62,000 miles.

Find out what it's worth selling privately at three sites. If he's offering more take the money and run.

what Billfitz said. If you are getting a good deal, and dont need the second car, might as well sell it.

Maybe the dealer knows something you don't know, like 2 kilos of yeyo hidden in the seats. Better get rid of that car, before the cartel finds you.

Depending on your state, remember to factor in sales tax savings from trading in.

Timing is practically everything when buying or selling a vehicle. Get more offers and compare with the dealer's offer.

That is a pretty good offer. Given the sales tax advantage it would give you it might be worth taking as opposed to selling it yourself. I’m not sure what 2018 330i’s are going for in the private party market. I’ll just sold my 2018 340i M Sport in outstanding condition with 43,300 miles for $34,250 right at four weeks ago. The best offer I got from Vroom right at the beginning of the year was $28,000. So, I managed to sell for a little over $6k more than that. I’m not sure you could get $30k for your car, but maybe $28k? Who knows? Edmund’s pricing is usually pretty on target.

They could have a demand for cars and cannot get new ones in. Our local Honda dealer was selling 3 year old cars, with 40,000km on the for the same price as a new one. Catch22 is you need to wait 7 months to get a new one.

Their inventory may be low so they'll pay more to get cars on the lot and make it up financing them. Unless you really need the 330 I'd take the offer and invest it elsewhere.

Supply vs demand and the 2 year extended warranty has a monetary value as well.

the whole supply and demand and pandemic shortage thing is still making me very much confused.

anyway. handed over my keys and title yesterday. the dealer upped their offer to $25,750.(on account of the remining BMW warranty, plus I somehow drove there with a full gas tank) I took it because it seemed like a fair offer and I really didn't feel like selling it privately and deal with strangers showing up at my house.(or worse, selling to a friend or family member and then hearing that "something's wrong with this or that" after two months)

I was a little surprised that at no point did they try to inspect my car, except to look at the mileage. Was it because it was always serviced there and they figured that it wasn't necessary?(but the last service was months ago)

Now I'm back driving the family minivan until the X1 arrives next month.

KBB shows your car's dealer trade-in value as $19K in excellent condition at 60K miles. Private party value is $22.5K You got a deal that is probably in the top 1% of all deals made on this model year. Frame it on the wall, because you will not see this again

Your deal is thanks to the lousy economy after COVID affecting trade/supply chains, the chip shortages, and Fed Reserve mismanagement of the "easy money" for a decade.

They probably offered you also this deal because they knew your car and the 2 year warranty is risk-off for the next buyer. The dealer, if in-house financed, can charge 6% interest rate vs. the zero they had for the last 5 years or more. That's +$4K return in 5 years on interest for them.

Wait until you see the ADM they may try and hit you with! If they do the trade in premium will vanish faster than withdrawals from Silicon Valley Bank.

I have a 2018 330i and the only reason I have the car (which I love) is because the dealer offered me 31k for my 2021 Nissan Altima because they couldn't get them in that had self driving on them.

I questioned acquiring 15k extra miles and 3 years but it's one of the best trades I've made. Love the BMW, dunno if I can ever go back.

Great deal you got!

That’s usually what happens.
