No Signal on Screen After Retrofitting Emtronika Reverse Camera

Hi all,

I got my hands on a fully stock base model 2013 328i and have been doing a bunch of work to it. Recently, I successfully retrofitted an NBT EVO iD6 HW 4.1 head unit with a new OEM 8.8” APIX 2 touchscreen from CodeMyBimmer (upgraded from a HU_ENTRY HU). Steve was super helpful with his responses and advice on what would suit me and my budget and the new head unit and screen have been working flawlessly since the install(no additional coding was needed).

I purchased the BVI350 reverse camera kit along with a front camera from Emtronika. I haven’t gotten around to installing the front camera yet and I haven’t ran the reverse camera wiring to the back of the car at the moment, but I did install the MMI box for it. The problem I am having is that after the MMI install, I am getting the ‘No Signal’ display on the screen. CarPlay still works and I am able to listen to music from Spotify and use navigation from Google Maps (audio only), but I am not sure what I need to do to get the display working. I did uninstall the MMI box and the screen works just fine again.

I’ve read through numerous threads and posts with possible solutions but haven’t had any luck. Steve has been helping out and said that he reviewed my vehicle’s configuration and also cross referenced the dip switch settings on Emtronika’s camera kit. He doesn’t believe I would need to have 3AG coded since the camera is the type that takes over the screen when in reverse gear.

Emtronika has also been great with their support letting me know what the dip settings should be set to (all but 7 switched in the off position). They are sending me a new display cable since the red light coming from inside the MMI box indicates something is wrong with the video cable.

Long story short, the display works fine with the NBT EVO head unit, but the ‘No Signal’ message comes up on the screen after installing the Emtronika reverse camera MMI box. I am hoping the new display cable helps to fix the problem, but looking for other solutions just in case it does not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Received the new cable from Emtronika today. They actually sent me two. Still no signal

Does anyone have any experience with what I'm going through?

Currently dealing with a similar issue. I have a 2015 228i with NBT EVO retrofit (Head unit HW3.2, not 4.1).

I installed the Emtronika kit in accordance to the procedure, but my iDrive screen kept flickering. Emtronika was very responsive, but we could not figure it out after trying a number of things (dip switches, swapping HSD cables, another BVI350 module etc.).

They seemed to be convinced it was grounding issue, but we ran out of things to try before they refunded me.

I was able to get audio, it would trigger the camera when I put my car in reverse (my car is manual), Apple CarPlay was fine – but again, there was a flickering that would not go away no matter what gear I was in.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear you’ve been having issues. Emtronika will be sending another module to me as well but it’s disappointing to hear that didn’t resolve your issue.

So your screen display would actually work minus the flickering?

When you remove the module and plug everything back in the way that it was before, does the flickering issue go away?

Regardless of our issues, Emtronika’s support has been outstanding. Our problems seem to be rare as both Emtronika and Steve from CodeMyBimmer has never had one of their customers experience this before after a NBT EVO HU retrofit.

That is correct – my screen would work minus the flickering.

When I removed the Emtronika module, and put everything back the way it was, the flickering issue went away.

I was in contact with Emtronika throughout the process – showed them pictures, videos of the flickering, videos of it NOT flickering when things were put back without the their module. They were very responsive, but spent a lot of time and very disappointed it never got to work.

Damn sorry to hear that…I wonder what the chances are of you getting two defective modules. I’m pretty sure Emtronika test out the modules before sending them out.

Mine is still in transit, probably stuck in customs so I can’t provide any updates. Thinking about other options?

Just fitted mine to a G30 and I get nothing in the screen, I do get sound and my phone goes it’s connected. Contacted them just waiting on a response.. on my install I was unable to use the existing video cable it was wrapped and running far to inside the car to remove so I order a new one which all connected fine. I do see the red light inside the unit in.

Update to the Emtronika install

So after a number of ours and testing with a volt meter the cable I had ordered from ebay to use from the head unit to the MMI unit had the power the wrong way round. Soon as i inverted them the screen came on and No Signal. Since then I worked out that the round pin in the pink housing needed rotating 180 which i did with a bit of heat to loosen it and by cutting the housing to allow it to sit properly.

Once this was done the screen came up and when put into reverse the rear camera came on.

Ideally I wanted to use the original cable from the head unit but it was to difficult to unwrap since my MMI had to be located behind the glove box.

I still do have an issue where the monitor flickers and by this I mean shifts back and forth to the right. I did test the ebay cable directly and no shifting only when connected after the MMI unit.

Waiting on Emtonika to respond to my email on this.

I tried to test the front camera but could not get it working when I hold the BMW dial in switches to the front camera but just displays text stating Back/Menu in blue.

I am beginning to wonder if I should have just had it installed by BMW.

Unhappy Update to the Emtronika install

Thought I would drop an update, so Emtronika have gone quite on me. I tested the cable from the headunit to the MMI by connecting it to the monitor directly and this gave me a clear signal. Once plugged back into the MMI unit I plugged the cable from the output and it was shaking. So either its the unit or the other cable.

I have since ordered a new cable since Emtronika have gone quite.

Also does anyone know if these units have a power cable for the front camera or do you just have to find one to power the camera?

I had no instructions and the online help they sent me was just an image which labelled the main wires but no mention of the front camera.
