Question on brake dust from M-sport brakes
For those with the M-Sport brakes from the THP, what is the level of brake dust - normal; minimal or bad? The reason I ask is I just installed the 788M wheels from my M2C exactly a week ago - washed the car this morning and got the Sonax out and the wheels were surprisingly dust free - just some minimal road grime and almost no brake dust. So, since this is a CPO, I'm curious about whether the previous owner changed out the brake pads or is it normal on the M-Sport brakes?

I can't say I know what pads are on my car now since I bought it used, but I believe the dealership replaced the pads and they would use the factory pads. I have a 2016 435i M Sport with the M brake calipers and they drop dust just looking at them.
We've had rain for the past week so I haven't washed the car until Saturday night and the wheels were so dark, they looked black.

The degree of brake dust generated by M Sport pads depends on one's personal perspective.
I personally do not think the brake dust is excessive, rather reflective of the design intent to provide aggressive initial bite. M Sport brakes are excellent at a very reasonable price if ordered new. |

...that drop dust just by looking at them. I can wash the car and drive 10 miles and there will be a light coating of brake dust. Imagine driving the car in stop and go traffic for 30 miles. The rims will be coated to the point that you can see the dust.
I plan on replacing mine with Powerstop Z26 ceramic pads. I put them on my Charger SRT with 4 piston Brembo's and there was no difference in the brake feel from factory, but the rims remained cleaner so much longer

Stock pads with the 405m wheels (lots of spokes/uneven surfaces) is a sore spot with me. I’ve recommended people get other wheels due to the time it takes to clean the wheels. I’ve resorted to taking them off when I wash the car to also be able to wipe down the caliper. The M Per yellow collects the dust like crazy. At the point where I’m debating spending the money on new pads to offset the time it takes me to clean the wheel area. Car JUST hit 10k this weekend.

The amount of dust the stock pads produce is literally the reason why I replaced them. Mine were brand new after being replaced during the CPO process and I went out of my way to replace them. Going by my CPO checklist they only replace if they are out of spec, those could very well be in spec aftermarket pads that weren't noticed.

Thanks all for the responses - I figured the dust must be a SOB - now I'm absolutely certain the pads were changed. I initially thought I would need to change them out, especially with keeping the 788 wheels clean.
I finally lucked out on something....

I have no issues with brake dust because my wheel color masks the dust. It's there but it blends in. I'm thankful.
