Hi there,

I'm thinking of buying a second hand BMW 520L black roof box for my F31 (2014) 335d White Touring.

I was wondering what the scale of the box would be like on the car? Anyone have this setup and has a photo?

Thanks!

Not a BMW roofbox, but here's a Thule Force XL (17 cu.ft. / 481 L) on my 2016 F31 328ix

It's set a bit forward so I can open the tailgate without interference.

I'm getting some OEM BMW roof bars for an X5 (F15, 2014) with a roof box I want to buy. I'm struggling to find out if they will fit my F31 (2014) 335d Touring.

Can anyone point me in the direction of, or confirm, if they will fit or not...

Many thanks!!

The bars will prob fit but it's the footpack/fixpoint that could be different. Go on to the Thule website and spec up both cars:
1. If the fix point is different then you'll need to change that to fit the rails.
2. Check with BMW for both cars if the footpack are the same then it's the fix point that needs to be changed.
3. If they are both completely different for the F15 and F31, then I'd checkout what Thule offers if you want to use the same across both cars without having to buy two sets.

This is the reason I go with generic brand like Thule, goes onto any car. Still using my bars/footpack from E91 then transferred to F31 and now on a G31. All I had to do was change the fix point.

Might just be me but I don’t get the logic of the thin aero bars and the price they command. The fact you’re putting a box on the roof will have far more impact on efficiency that the minuscule surface area difference between these and the standard bars.

OEM all day for me

Brilliant, thanks. I'll have a look through the above!

This would also be the case for me. I probably won't leave the bars on all the time, just pop them on when I need the box I want to also buy. Maybe the odd other use - ladder, timber etc. very rare though and not for any long length of time.

Thanks!

I hear you. Got two sets of bars the old Thule Aerobars and the Wingbar Evo. Actually prefer the Aerobars as they are the perfect shape for the roofbox power grips and as you say once the roofbox/bikes are up the aero effect is zippo.

I move bikes and kayaks around a lot.
the square section Thule steel bars are bomb proof.

Tbe cam straps don't grip as well to aero bars and noise is not a consideration with 4 mountain bikes on. Also I've seen the aero bars flex and sag on other people's cars.
Not as pretty as the aero bars but roof racks never will be a style addition.

We bought the Cruz roof bars from https://www.roofbox.co.uk.

Originally for our Mini as it had roof rails already. Once we bought the F30, I just spent another £25 on the specific roof bar mounting brackets for that model and we now have a roof bar system we can use on both cars without needing two separate sets of bars.

Roof box we went with the Kamei 510L which was expensive at over £400 but its massive and I am glad we went with the bigger one. Two person job to get on but just sits in the garage when unused.

Edit - Just realised this is an old thread. Never mind!

+1 on all of this. roofbox.co.uk are excellent. I also have the Cruz bars and the Kamei box, both spot on. I have to say that I never take my roof bars off, too much of a faff if you use them with any frequency.

I would keep ours on but the noise they make without the roof box is unbearable once you get to 70mph. Box on, they are fine.

I am too lazy, plus it drowns out the noise from the back seats

You've got the rubber infill strips for the T tracks, right?

Yeah I have got those but it didn't seem to help much. We only use them 2-3 times a year and even less at the moment so just bang them in the garage when not being used.

I’ve got the Thule Evo wingbars with the Motion XL XT roofbox (500L capacity) on my 335d. Looks smart (as far as roofbox/rails go) and relatively quiet!
