What does the oil temperature gauge show? That's what matters.

Oil temp is normal. At the quarter mark in the city and 230-240 highway. It won't ever exceed that unless you have some other serious issue.

Still don't feel like 5w-30 is enough if I'm pushing it.

I don't like the oil temp gauge. Now I always think its running hot on the freeway. I prefer my E39, doesn't have an oil temp gauge and all I need to know is the temp stays in the middle no matter how hot it is here in CA

Would it be a bad idea to experiment running a 0w-30 or 5w-30 alternative during the summer months?

I use to always run a LL-01 Castrol 5w-30 Euro blend in all my previous BMWs and I would love use this in my N20. However, I worry it is too much of a viscosity difference from the recommended 0w-20 currently in my car.

Any of you guys have any experience moving up from BMWs 0w-20 oils?

I've been using penzoil 5w30 euro full synthetic for 3 years. Works great!!!

I use Castrol Edge 0W40 (or 5W40) in my E39, but they lost the LL01 certs somewhat recenetly. I'm sure it's fine, but for our X3, I would rather stick with something that holds LL01.
+1 on the Liqui Moly!!

I've been using it on my F31 for a while now.

I'm going to start changing the oil on my F87 and plan on using the same.

I use LiquiMoly Molygen 5w-30. No problem with New Hampshire weather, which isn't much different from Montreal. I'd only consider 0w-20 if you must leave the car parked on the street overnight.

0w40 (or 0w30).

Continuing to run 0w20 is not a good idea for the long haul.

Even unheated it would never get really cold, with the floor being below the frost line.

I would get winter wheels, 17 inch, with Bridgestone Blizzak. 17 inch gives a higher tire sidewall, which better protects against pothole damage to both tires and wheels.

That's why I said get winter wheels. You don't want to be paying someone to move the tires from rim to rim every six months.

0W-20 Ultra Synthetic Pennzoil

Hi everyone

I drive a 2016 320i xdrive in Toronto

Under the hood and dealership says 0W-20. The BMW Motorsport oil is LL-17 FE certified 0W-20 I believe.
However, I went with Pennzoil Ultra synthetic 0W-20
but it's not LL-17 or 14 certified.

Is that really a big deal. Any suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks everyone.

Pennzoil make the oem bmw oil nowadays but if your buying Pennzoil oil itself then go buy the European Formula that should be the same as what the dealer sell as oem.
