A radar detector and/or laser jammer/deflector (whatever) can potentially help you avoid getting a ticket, no denying that. For the most part, though, if you do get a speeding ticket, don't lose hope. The one thing you need to keep in mind is that the officer needs to get many, many things to happen without error in order to have a solid case against you. You, on the other hand, need only have one of those many things be called into doubt and/or go wrong. At the very least, you should be able to get the points eliminated and keep your driving record clean.

Check out this page and you'll see what I mean.

Good luck.

Personally, I'm using the 9500ix and it has saved me a handful of times. Still need to hardwire a power source though, I've been dealing with the dangling power cord so far.
+1

I also went with the 9500ix the range is similar to the V1 but the 9500ix has a built in GPS so it learns your regular routes and do not go off for all those gas stations and stores. I prefer to only hear the detector when its really a cop. So if my detector goes off anytime in my area or on my way to work then I know its a cop.

I've been here 10 years, never even been pulled over.

Try OR or WA if you want a ticket-happy state. WA had a TON of laser even 12-13 years ago, whereas CA is just starting to catch on in the past few years.

In CA, if you're not doing more than 20 over, they won't even blink. Traffic moves so fast you won't stand out, and CHP are a rare sight on the freeways in both norcal and socal. Only place I've been with higher freeway speeds is the Atlanta area.

No doubt, it really depends on where you live and drive. Here in the Northeast, the V1 works great for me. I almost never see laser, the biggest threats are instant-on radar which I have run across in NH (so the more range, the better, so you get warned when cars ahead of you are targeted), and troopers coming up from behind in stealth mode, which could happen anywhere. I try to avoid being first or last in a pack.

Nice mounting location! This is exactly where I put my 9500 in my last car. Do you have any issues with the suction cups losing grip? I ended up purchasing a large single piece clamp style suction cup mount as my detector kept coming lose. Now my mount is not so subtle anymore

I agree. The GPS is a large reason many like the 9500ix, myself included.

I think the general consensus is the V1 may be a bit better for highway driving while the 9500ix is more ideal for city driving. I'm happy with the performance of my 9500, though I'm confident a V1 would be fine for me as well.

Hey guys... I posted this in a different thread a couple months ago but thought I'd pass long here as well.

I "hardwired" my Bel RX-65 from the outlet in the passenger footwell. I actually modified the Bel's cig lighter plug-in adaptor and then ran the wiring around the footwell to the door seal, up the A-pillar, and underneath the headliner (see below for some pics).

I actually chose this solution so that I didn't have to "mod" any of the vehicle wiring (tap into wires, etc.). Works great and it was pretty easy.

I've actually had my Bel in three separate vehicles and my experience has been VERY positive... nice balance of simplicity, functionality, and form (Plus it's saved my arse more than a few times!).

Let me know if you have any questions!

Cable is run behind the upper vents (panel removes easily) then down behind and underneath the steering wheel. The spongy gasket below the wheel helps hold it in place.

Not ideal, but it was the cleanest solution I found without modifying anything (leased car)

Why do you think they call it a trap? A cop can hide any place - and by the time you see them hiding, if they have a Lidar/Radar gun and you're pinned, you've got a ticket.

So yes, you can drive slow all the time, or any time you don't have a complete open view of the road, but keep in mind America doesn't all look the same. A long stretch of open highway is much different than some of the twisty, turning, hilly, tree ridden environments that are perfect for cops to hide with no way for you to know until you blow past them.

You may view it as expensive - but think of it this way.

A traffic ticket + the resulting insurance hike is usually much more than $500. Especially if you decide to pay a lawyer to tackle it for you since in some states you'll also get hit with reckless driving.

If that radar detector/laser jammer saves you even once, you've automatically paid off your investment. And for the most part they'll be useful for years to come.

My V1 has saved me countless times, and my jammers at least 2x. In fact I haven't installed jammers on the BMW, and I'm mildly nervous since the Long Island Expressway recently switched back to the LIDAR bandits of the Suffolk County PD.

Radar detectors leak a very weak signal of Radar. Cops have Radar Detector Detectors that pick those signals up and tell the cop you have one.

1) They can turn off their radar and just sneak up behind you in the patrol car.
2) Many are switching to LIDAR which makes a radar detector obsolete (i.e. norcal).
3) They have a cop hiding with the radar, shoot it briefly so you think it's just a misfire, then call it in to officers on the road
4) Most cops just eyeball it now (which is perfectly legal if you're going 15 mpg over the speed limit) and don't even use a gun because of the radar detectors.

Just to name a few, since the downturn in the economy they are trying to make more revenue by pulling people over for stupid crap. Why bother with a detector anymore... For Cali, just keep an eye out, don't go faster than the fastest car out there, a tip from a retired CHP officer.
+1 My last speeding ticket was 1993, LAPD motor cop with radar. You just need to have situational awareness.

For those looking to hardwire their 9500ix, I used the invisicord and followed JBM's post here: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showth...light=detector

@tiltmode - no issues with the stock suction cups that come with the detector.

I would have rather used one of these: http://www.countryjoycrafts.com/escortmount.html as I did in my previous car, but the space behind the F30 mirror is too small.

Only drawbacks with the location are:
1. It's not close to my line of sight as it would be if it were directly under the mirror.
2. Little clearance between detector and headliner, makes hitting the mute button more of an effort. But like ric124 said, the built-in GPS helps cut down on false alerts so I don't have to mute as often.

I used to use K40 back in the day, when I cared about 1 sec of arrival time and taking unnecessary risks. If I still cared about those things, I'd probably get another K40...not that I would recommend violating any laws either speeding, possessing or using a radar/lidar detector/jammer.

I've got the Passport 9500ix in my Viper and 335i xDrive. Going to move to the K40 360 & Jammer in the next couple of weeks.

How about the invisible ones?

https://www.beltronics.com/store/sti-magnum.html

Unfortunately all of them do not prevent the facts that most cops are trained to trigger the gun at the last seconds.

Spend as much on a radar as you would on a nasty speeding ticket. Once you have in that head, you can justify spending the $$$.

Think of every time it saves you as paying a dividend. My V1 has paid for itself many times over.

I trust nothing less than V1.

Good herding instincts/practices certainly help avoid being caught by predators.

If you are going to try it, you may want to look at Bel products. They have one that can't be detected by the radar detector detectors.

That said, it may be hard to buy one via the mail for as far as I know, the makers won't ship them to places where radar detectors are illegal.
