e92 to F30 (340i)

Hey guys,
So I'm currently the happy owner of a '10 335i e92 6MT. Problem is with family growth I'm getting increased pressure to switch to a sedan. I'm currently at 86k and still absolutely love the car but am entertaining a change but I have some concerns.

I've gone FBO minus meth on my n54 and I love how it pulls, drives, and the overall responsiveness. I'm concerned that jumping into the B58 will be a "step down" in performance (albeit a step up in reliability overall). I've put a lot of time, money, etc into getting my e92 to where it is performance-wise and I'm not really ready to walk that back.

Anyone come from a similar situation? What type of work would I have to do to the B58 to put up similar numbers to what I'm seeing from my n54 on a daily basis (I don't have e85 accessible so just 93 octane DD)? What packages are must-haves for enthusiasts (my e92 was an msport)?

If you had msport suspension on your e92, you'll want to ensure you have it on an f30. The base f30 suspension is softer than in the e92, though it was supposedly stiffened a bit in the lci.

Another thing you'll probably notice in the f30 compared to the e92 will be the relative lack of feedback through the steering column. This is something I'd grown accustomed to, but recently had pounded home again after recently driving cars with more feedback (plain, unadorned rental cars).

I'm not sure how your car with n54 and fbo would compare to the stock b58, so I'll leave that for others to answer.

Awesome. Thanks very much for the feedback. I was kinda thinking I need to look for one with the track handling package to try and offset some of the changes.

Hoping someone can chime in on the engine/power stuff.

I had a full-Dinan S3 '07 E92 335i 6MT Sport with exhaust, intake, tune, FMIC and OC plus aftermarket wheels and non-runflats. After 5 years with that car, it became apparent that I needed a 4-door (grandkid, friends with bad backs, etc.), so I sold it and bought my current F30. It's got the MPPK, MPE, a K&N drop-in filter and a JB+ along with DHP, aftermarket wheels and non-runflats. Not as much power as the E92, but more than adequate for where I live now (Coastal NC vs. TX previously).

What I'd recommend is what I'm planning on doing - waiting 1 more year for the upcoming G20 M340i, which is supposed to have around 380 HP in stock form and is similar to the M235i/M240i in concept. Not sure if the new chassis will use the current B58 or some variation of that engine in a higher tune state.

Wow, didn't know that. Issue is I buy used so I would have to wait 1-2 years after that to pick it up for what I'm looking to pay. If it were up to me, I would wait it out but I feel like my home life would be much happier if I didn't . Plus at that point a '15 M3 would likely dip down into my price range.

Drive both a 704 M suspension car and an adapative suspension car before you make up your mind about the track handling package. I changed my mind after some test drives, even though it was very tough to walk from the track handling package.

I wrote a review when I went from my E92 335i to my F30 340i.
In short I don't regret it at all. Didn't have the power mods you have on your E92, though.

I went from an E92 335i 6MT with an N54 to a F10 535i 8AT with an N55 to a F30 340i 8AT with a B58. All RWD. All 3 cars had the sport package (passive 704 suspension).

I didn't have any power mods on my E92 but power wise it felt somewhere between the stock B58 and a B58 with the MPPSK. I just recently installed the MPPSK so the difference between stock B58 and MPPSK is still fresh in my mind.

F10 with the N55 was noticeably slower. Probably mostly because of the weight and the engine tuning. The known tip in issue was very noticeable on that car especially compared to the E92 before it. Steering was also very very numb and way too light.

Suspension feel on my F30 is worlds better than the F10, but not as tight feeling as it was on the E92. F30 feels heavier and has more body roll in corners. Steering on the F30 in sport mode has similar weight to the E92 but it lacks road feedback. Its something I've gotten used to.

Adaptive suspension is a must have. Get the Track handling package. I was over budget so I chose the stand alone adaptive suspension option but the 1700 is worth it for the blue brakes for sure.

In my opinion the adaptive suspension is a must have and most reviews seem to agree. Especially if you want a more comfortable ride with family in the car.

If you stick with static suspension you should go with M performance suspension which lowers a bit more and handles better
