Get under and visually inspect. Look for fluid coming from the inner bushings on the Upper Control Arms. Look for any loose bolts in the suspension. Find a local Indy mechanic to go over it thoroughly. See BimmerShops website

Visited three mechanics, two BMW shops and one indy(a friend)
1.First shop (BMW), had no idea what It could be and told me to live with it. recommended shop nr 2 2. Second BMW shop looked and believed it was the Steering rack, quoted the job and labor abit under 6000 USD. This was a new rack and installing it. 3. Third shop, an indy and friend lifted it and we look through all the bushings front and rear, Thrust arm bushing in both sides are rotting(might be the wrong word) but no fluid, but we think it is the u join in the steering column. as wiggling the steering wheel back in forward made about the same sound and it pretty loud. Is the U join going bad a common problem ? |

xDrive? Adaptive suspension?
I have the same sound I think, and mine has always done it. Kind of sounds like hollow popcorn driving on any sort of uneven pavement? I've got millway spherical bearings in my tension rods (with new balljoints), new end links and camber plates. I've checked whether the sound changes depending on loading and it doesn't. It knocks with the suspension loaded in every direction, with the steering loaded, with the engine under torque to load the engine mounts. Only things I can think of at this point are LCA ball joints since those are original, axles knocking the end of their travel, and damper internals. I don't think it's the steering (which is a known issue on F30s) because the noise is much duller than the back and forth knocking when the car is off, and it still does it even when the steering rack is loaded. Makes the car feel pretty jank, honestly. |

It seems to happen on every kind of road, most are bad here in Sweden due to taxes going to the wrong thing We tried that but it all seems normal, even went to a alignment shop and asked them to look, and they also found it weird Tried to record the sound but this the best I can do https://youtube.com/shorts/Z_M-tR_HLZ4?feature=share |
