Interesting. That isn't how it was described to me but I just looked at product page and yeah they do say something vague about "can be used with multiple VINs only one at a time". That's surprising!

Does the handheld unit need to be plugged into OBD all the time? Where/how did you mount yours?

It’s not necessary to keep it plugged in. Once you finish the flash, unplug and your ready. It does have the ability to display some virtual gages and do some logging, which require it to be plugged in, but otherwise no need.

Interesting. Do you recommend getting one? How many miles are you running with dinan flash?

Mine's on a 2016 340i. I don't know if the performance / expectation between the B46 and B58 are the same, but here's my feedback anyways. I flashed the 91 octane map back in February and put about 2000 miles on it with zero issues. A couple weeks ago I flashed the 93 octane map and only have a couple hundred miles on it but it feels very strong and smooth. This is my first voyage into tuning, so I like it... It does exactly what I was looking to accomplish. I think it's a good fit for people looking for nice smooth power gains that do not really plan to upgrade past stage 1 or mess with a lot of custom settings. Staying emissions legal and not relying on somewhere/someone else for bench unlocking is what sold me.

Nice! Let everyone know what you think. If you do your own DME unlock with the Dinan hardware they include, just watch the cars wire harness to DME connectors when plugging them back in. It’s not very obvious when they are fully seated if you haven’t done it before. The levers on the connectors don’t really pull them in. You have to push them all the way in by hand before locking back in place with the lever. I messed up and didn’t have them seated all the way when I did it. It probably didn’t help that it was winter and the wires weren’t very flexible.

I am also interested in hearing feedback. Also running a b46 with a 6spd looking for more power.

Reporting back.
Dinan shipped it overnight and I finished DME unlock and installed 91 octane tune (for now). I messed around with throttle sensitivities for comfort and sport mode as well. Car pulls hard in comfort, even harder in sport mode. Before the dinan flash tune in any driving mode, oil temp would reach almost to the middle, I think close to 250F. Probably due to the heatwave in Texas. I noticed today after the tune, oil temp barely reaches 220F and confirmed with bimmerlink. Seems to be turning on cooling more frequently. I asked dinan support and it’s by design and assured me there’s no negative long term impact to it. But if the fan motor or cooling system is running more frequently vs. before, my logic is that it’s going to wear out the parts sooner. Other than that observation, car feels great. I don’t need to select sport mode all the time since comfort mode is pretty much acts as stock sport mode. I’m gonna drive it for few weeks and flash the 93 octane, then report back. Aaron77 thanks for your feedback. |

As long as you don’t beat on the gas pedal in gear, clutch and flywheel should hold up for a bit. |

^ It is normal in Sports Mode
If you switch it back to comfort mode the temps will go back up. I wont activate Sports mode until oil is all the way warmed up. I normally just drive in comfort mode. |

I did notice the oil temp being held at a much lower temp when in sport and sport plus. Comfort is held at the same place as it was without the tune. I also reached out to Dinan tech about this right after I flashed, and this is exactly what they said "The temp fluctuation is normal as there are safety parameters factored into the calibration to adjust for safe measures when more is being requested of the vehicle. So you have all of your factory safety values as well as the calibration having safety values adjusted so it is kind of like having a back up for you back up in a way.". I guess it makes sense because from what I understand, a cooler engine can make more power, is less prone to knock, and obviously when making more boost the turbo runs hotter - why not try to manage the oil temps better? I still am trying to understand more about this and how exactly it is being accomplished. If there is something that would wear or fail prematurely - it would be great to understand... It looks like some of the other tunes (at least bootmod3) have the ability to activate "Max Cool mode", which maybe is the same as this? If someone understands what exactly is happening with this mode or even how the oil cooling is regulated, It would be helpful. There are a bunch of bootmod3 fans here, so please share what you know!

Nope. On a Japanese car many years ago when I was a yoot, I just hole-sawed the stock airbox for sound. Worked fine for that (silly) purpose. However with most German cars the stock airbox is much more/better engineered than people think, you'd probably impair flow with that approach. I believe many cheapo "intake" kits do zero or perhaps even negative to the airflow.

But on the x7; I have an AFe Pro Dry S filter. Everyone has their opinions, but I feel like it helps the RPM sticks better when you blip the throttle. |
