An open intake must be in the back of the front grill or somewhere you can get the cold air from outide and not a hot air in the hood where the air is hot....

No data , dyno have shown any change in performance from different intakes styles (open, close) or ones with heat and shields or without.

So far all the data show that the results are the same

Maybe for the data (and it's only numbers, you can make them said what you want about it), but how about the health of your engine ? Do you think it's very good for your engine to aspire hot air specaly in summer in LV after a long journey or after a day on track ??

Well we are many people who think that open air box are (sorry to said that) crap.

No meth, I stay natural

dear lord - move on - I mean welcome to forum but try contributing something meaningful - this topic ranks up there with the debadge debate (been beaten to death)

also not good form to jump in on a known and trusted sponsor thread like this when he is advertising something for sale (if nothing else go start another thread)

"but how about the health of your engine ? Do you think it's very good for your engine to aspire hot air specaly in summer in LV after a long journey or after a day on track ??" oh okay now that you ask that way - he's going to change his mind? Uh no - he's already stated his position

And in closing I would suggest you don't state "many people" to bolster your position - that's just stupid...kids like to do that. Stand up on your own two feet or site specific data - but "many" people is just pointless

Welcome to the forums

The data i have seen does not show any difference between closed/open intakes. I am open to changing my mind if other studies show otherwise, but in all my years here i have not seen one that back your theory.

Please note: I am not saying on all cars and all engines open is the same. Im talking specifically about turbo BMWs.

Mike, I think it's a pretty broad statement to make about open filters in BMW engined cars.

There are different configurations of BMW 3 series engines with respect to the lacation of the air filter. It can be on the hot side (B58 exhaust side) or it can be on the cold sidbe (N55 intake side).

I haven't seen BMS doing this specific test with the b58 engine.
Saying that a test done on the effects of heat on the intake system/performance being directly applicable across different engine layouts is a lot of assuming.

When it comes to the B58 engine (or any engine layout not tested) we don't know until someone does this test.

fyi. I have an AP open filter installed not because it will perform so much better but because it sounds awesome.

VM did a dyno with only an intake and it showed HP increase. VM can be considered an independent source since they do not sell intakes

That dyno plus BMS tests is enough for me ... As i said before , i am more than happy to look at other data but during all my years on this forum, not even one member that claim open intakes are bad had any data to provide.

So until we see data claiming otherwise, BMS test is the best reference.

Well thanks it's been near a year that I've subscribe, but 2 years of looking at.

I'm not saying the difference about HP, flow, performance about closed or open.

What I'm trying to said, it's how about the health of your engine after 1-2 years driving with an open box.

I'm pretty sure that a motor with a close box will be in better health than an open.

FYI: my 340 was 338HP with a BMC filter (on the stock air box), and about the results from manufacturer it's like the fuell consumption there always 2-3L difference.

OK, Many = BMW,DM Performance, BR performance, mechanic specialist. It's enough for you ??

CIRCLING THE DRAIN Well thanks, you have been deepened than me.

Im sorry but i cant agree with your assumption that your filter is healthier to the engine than an open intake when you you dont have any data to back it up + thousands of users are using all different brands of open intake. I never heard of a single engine damage because of it

That being said , lets just agree to disagree

Mike is just promoting the intake that it’s back in stock a new thread should be created on n54tech in relates to a open intake and let the makers chime in. This thread shouldn’t be talked about rocket science intake air temps and harm to your engine with a open intake or how boring closed intakes sound. I like open intakes and some don’t and everyone’s opinion shouldn’t make a difference just buy and use what you think is right.
