Torque Wrench

I'm sure this has been answered in another post/forum. I have a F36 4 series and I'm wondering what torque wrench I need for it. I have the non marring lug not socket which is 1/2".

Thanks in advance!

If all you are looking to do is torque tires- one those goes to about 103 lb feet.

Most 1/2 inch ones go from 25-200 ish.

If you're not going to use if very often, I got a nice .5 inch "click" type torque wrench at Harbor Freight. It isn't fancy, but since I only use it twice a year to swap wheels it is just fine.

So it's a 1/2 inch torque wrench then? Just making sure I get the right one.

Has to be - you bought a half inch socket. It has to match your socket and I would not use a 3/8 to tighten lugs anyhow

Yes, it is. I had to get that size since I've never seen one of those nylon sleeved protective lug sockets in anything other than .5 in. They do sell them in multiple sizes, so just make sure you get the right one.

I think I picked up mine for around $20. Despite the price, it seems to be very well made and has served me well through multiple wheel swaps so far. It comes in a nice storage case too.

Yeah I just looked one up on Harbor Freight website, I have a Harbor Freight near me. Found a 1/2 inch torque wrench for $20. Think I'll pick one up. Harbor Freight is slowly becoming one of my favorite stores.

HF torque wrenches are on sale, the Pittsburg ones, for $12. At least they were last week. I was going to just get the 1/2" one for $20 but bought all three instead.

Just picked one up from Harbor Freight. It was $20. Still a much better price than most.

With a coupon, they used to go as low as $10. Not sure if that's still the case.

HF also has a lifetime warranty on their torque wrenches. You could theoretically trade it for a brand new one every year or so and avoid any potential losses in calibration. The owner's manual recommends recalibration every 6 months. I've had a couple where the click wasn't very pronounced.

Needs to reach at least 140 Nm or 103.26 ft-lb of force.

Since you already have 1/2 inch sockets, look for a torque wrench that is also 1/2 inch. However, though not ideal, you can also use a conversion piece (e.g. 1/2 to 3/8 inch).

I go overboard on tools. If you want the best, get Precision Instruments, CDI, or Snap-On. These are overkill for the 1-2/year use. Harbor Freight has been validated in a few online reviews (in terms of accuracy) and should be fine for light use.

Just for anyone seeing this thread while researching tools...

If we're all talking about the same Harbor Freight .5" click-type torque wrench, I think think it goes up to 200 ft/lbs. I know when I set it to 103, it has plenty of room to go higher if I ever needed it.

If people in this thread are looking for a torque wrench that is actually accurate, as opposed to the usual Horrible Freight stuff.

Whichever wrench you buy, store it at it's lowest setting to maintain calibration longer. Set it to the torque you need, and lock with the locking thumbscrew. After use, back off the locking screw and set to the lowest setting. Lock the screw again and put it in the case. Best practice.

That's a good investment if you're a professional or semi-professional mechanic who uses a torque wrench at least once a month, if not weekly or even daily. For probably 95% of backyard mechanics $130 would pay for a complete tool set adequate for their needs.
