Good to know!
This was the main reason I haven’t flashed mine yet.

It's completely unrelated to power, so you can flash freely.
The triturbo M550d uses the same exact transfer case.

Yeah, I meant because my (only) dealership has become very uptight about that stuff.

I have all my stock parts to swap back in if I need to

Reviving this thread after registering on the forum.

I little background as much as it pains me to admit this. My wife's car suffers from this problem and has been sitting in the garage since October of 2018. I have driven it very gingerly in the neighborhood every now an then but otherwise it sat.

Last I checked it was around $7k to fix the problem, the car has just over 60k miles so its out of warranty. Anyways, last week I got the notice of the recall and my wife got all exited until she read there is no fix yet. I did a search and this thread popped up, I wish I would have searched before but I was quite frustrated with the whole situation and did not want to even look.

Anyways, today I started taking the car apart and the first snag was the reinforcement bars that go from the middle of the car diagonally right behind the differential. Anyone knows what size Torx that is? The T50 I have is too small.

My plan is to remove the flange and have a look at it, but I suspect I need a new transfer case as it makes a huge loud thud when going into drive or reverse.

This is the 6th BMW that I have owned and it has make me reconsider getting another one.

Thanks.

Off the top of my head, it's T60.

Odd, my letter said Remedy is Available.
I will probably just have BMW pay for the cost of the parts in reimbursement and that's it. I've done about 20k miles on it with this fix.

Thanks for the size. I am now debating whether to keep disassembling or calling the dealer?

This is the letter that I received:

So let's assume when I had this fixed back in Oct, they were the correct parts. And I ask for a reimbursement and let's say I receive one. If it breaks again, will they honor the recall?

Dropped off the car at the dealer today. I will let you guys know how this progresses.

I called a service advisor and told him that I received the letter and it said that there was no fix yet. He put me on hold while he talked to the parts guy and told me to bring it in. He said they needed to take it apart and diagnose the problem.

They gave me an X3 loaner for now and told me that they would cover 2 days rental for now. If it takes longer I will just return it, luckily I have an extra car.

I'm curious of any different part numbers or any changes in process. Thanks for letting us know!

Got a call today from the SA.

Car is apart and parts arrive tomorrow. Should be fixed by Friday. He did not know if they are changing the output flange or the whole transfer, will check and get back to me tomorrow. Odd that he did not know but maybe the tech orders the parts?

BTW they are doing both the transfer case recall and the EGR one.

Last update below via text from the SA. I am trying not to push hard for details right now as I feel they are treating me VERY well by letting me keep the loaner as well as taking care of another minor annoyance that I had even though the car is past the warranty period. I will probably find out more come Monday.

My main concern is what happens if they only change the giubo and then the transfer case fails. Let's pray it does not.

It looks like they are going to swap in a new transfer case.
The car was driven to the dealership and it would drive fine. There was no hesitation and with the windows closed and radio on you would never know there were any problems.
I realized there was a problem while driving inside of a parking garage with the windows open, you could hear a loud clunk when applying/releasing the throttle. After that I could clearly hear it driving with the radio off.
I doubt the joint turned, but it was probably quite worn by the time I caught it as its my wife's car and she does not pay much attention to any noises.

Yea, if it's really worn, then they are being nice and replacing it completely.

Do you know what part number will be used? Any other special procedures or installation things they are doing?

By the sounds of it it's just a transfer case replacement is with the current part number plus the rubber giubo, but unsure if enough to be preventative.

As much as I agree with you that the Loctite is a great way of preventing this from happening again, I don't think they would want to do it. This particular dealer doesn't even let you talk to the tech.

My plan is to get the transfer replaced by them, and the second the car is at my house remove the joint and apply Loctite myself. I think I should be OK putting 10 miles from the dealer to my house and I have no problems doing the job.

Now the bigger question for me is, if this problem surfaces again in 30k miles, will BMW cover it again or its a one time deal?

Exactly, I'd rather not have to deal with it again, instead of the hope that BMW would fix it in 5 years, etc.
I'm keeping my N47 (and plan to get more) for life, so I wouldn't want to be tethered to BMW's "generosity"

The rubber giubo may be enough, but the relatively loose flange doesn't help. It obviously doesn't need to have play front to back by design (spacers and C clip to hold it tight), so the fine rotational play needs to be eliminated.

Yes, mine was fixed under the recall. Took 1 week for the EGR + Transfer case recall to be done. They will order parts as needed, so they disassemble first and then they order.

On the EGR my whole intake manifold was changed

Mine too, check this out. They sent me home saying the EGR was entirely fine. A few weeks later this happened...

Thank you!
That's the same part number transfer case they have been using for a while for the core exchange ones.

Interesting that they changed your def injector/sprayer? Did they damage it?

@Enabled Looks like most, not all of the parts, on my list is on his list too? You think I could get reimbursed for my whole repair?
