Plan to hit 250k plus on my F30 / N26
Own this vehicle and its not going anywhere. Only a matter of cost to keep it on the road. I honestly don't expect anything exceptional. So far so good at almost 69k miles. In the meantime, oil and filter every 5k. |

I believe the 328i has the 4 cylinder turbo engine. There have been reports of the timing chain having problems. When the car gets near 100k miles I would start to worry about that.

Running long OCI (greater than 7k miles) and also allowing ASS to engage constantly are thought to be the leading causes of premature timing chain failure. |

BMW N20 engines received warranty extensions due to timing chain related issues.
More in https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1482736 If the timing chain snaps, the destructive consequences can retire the engine prematurely. There is no reason why the vehicle should not last 200K miles if proper and proactive maintenance has been done: timing chain and guides, charge pipe, injectors, wiring from DME to spark plugs, spark plugs, and oil / filter changes every 7.5K miles on average. |

Please explain injectors and wiring from DME to spark plugs as known failure items? Not debating, just unfamiliar and interested. |

N20 engines use direct injection. Bad injectors can literally dump fuel causing misfires. Spark plugs at the end of their useful life can make misfires worse. Combine it with bad wiring (rubber insulation weakens with time) which does not deliver proper electrical signals and it's easy to use how these three components have to work together well to prolong engine life.
It's common to replace direct injectors and pay attention to spark plugs and wires later. All three need attention especially properly gapped spark plugs after injector replacement. |

Interesting. Good points. Ive already changed my plugs to one step colder NGK. Probably do injectors and second set of plugs at 100k
In addition to the timing chain issue... Im personally interested in the longevity of the following (made of plastic). Prone to cracking or warping? 1. Oil pan 2. Valve cover |

My 2004 E46 330ci is at 228K and going strong. I'm not original owner but I've put less than 1K into it in the span of 2 years; that's pretty damn cheap to me. You just have to be on top of maintenance; more importantly preventative maintenance rather than reactive. Naturally aspirated engines usually can go longer but that isn't to say forced induction engines can't either. Either way, it doesn't matter what car it is, it's all about how to take care of it and how it's driven.

I have had 2 BMW's now running fairly reliable over 300.000 miles, one of them closer to 350.000 miles. Can be done with proper maintenance and mechanical respect.

I've spent on average $83.33 per month over the last 5 years on my 2012 328i (F30) and that includes two sets of top-notch Conti tires. Before that I did not have to cover anything out of pocket. Not bad at all IMO. Car's got 110k on it and going strong.

I'm at 91k miles, will get the timing chain done. Spark plugs done, oil changes every 7,500k give or take. I do need to get the intake manifold walnut blasted and I'll try to get it done every 40k or so miles. My commute now will be 37-39k miles a year so I'll be racking it up quick.

Had a 2011 335i two year ago with 177K when I turned it into the dealer. Besides the usual upkeep, everything was original except for the radiator.

Noticed someone on one of the FB groups, posted about his 300k mile N20.
That's the highest Ive seen so far. Anyone beat that? Im at 122k and rolling along nicely. Knock on wood... 200k should be doable for sure. |
