wheels size ?

Is it best to get 19 x 8.5 then on rear 19 x 9.5 or 19 x 8.5 all round ???

I know the 19 x 9.5 is better grip but I only have a 318d would it be any better for when it snows to have them or not make any difference ??

Basically what I'm asking is what the pros and cons are to haveing 19x 8.5 or 19 x9.5 at the rear

Thanks

The wider wheels are just if you want to fit wider tyres.

In snow narrower tyres tend to get better grip, as the wider tyres just give you a bigger area to slip about. To be fair the best thing for snow is to get some winter tyres on narrow wheels.

If you want grip in snow/icey conditions, then you need winter tyres or an all-season alternative like cross-climates.

The exact wheel/tyre size doesn't really matter that much. But you will be astonished what a RWD BMW can actually get through on a set of winters.

I'd stick with the 8.5J.

Wider Tyres;
Lower fuel economy (rolling resistance)
Louder tyre roar
More susceptible to aquaplaning, loosing adhesion under wet conditions.
Same applies for snow and ice.

Benefits;
Looks? Possibly?
Wider contact patch (more grip in dry conditions)
This results in the ability to increase braking performance and cornering speed before reaching the limit of adhesion.

For a non X-Drive car, rear and front tyre sets do not have to be size matched. I'd argue to go for the cheapest option and spend your money on a great set of summer tyres and another quality set of winter tyres. To be honest, with a good set of tyres, you can't go wrong.

Best of luck!

Should be 225 on the front with 255 rear to keep within the correct tolerance

As a 235 has an 8mm greater diameter than the 255's

Yeah spot on.
w

What I meant to say is you have to keep the ratio the same on an X-Drive car, So if your rears are wider, then they have to stay the same percentage wider than the fronts.

At least that's what I've been told anyway.

You're right they are 225 on front not 235. 👍
