Reliability / Maintenance Costs of Flashed B58

Hi all,

Planning on picking up my 340i in the coming months when I start working outside of NYC. Currently drive my family's N55 F30 tuned with BM3 Stage 1 and VRSF CP before I left for school.

The N55 so far has been bulletproof, although not pushing it too hard since it's only stage 1. As of recent it seems BMW is more regularly flagging warranties due to flashing. Of course I know this is all dependent on being cool with SA and depending on how major of an issue you need solved at the dealership.

Folks, I've been waiting for this moment since I was 16. I literally cannot wait to get my car with my own money and slap some downpipes and a flash tune on the B58. Putting my warranty aside, is there any common issues that I could expect to have with Stage 2 and downpipes on a car with sub 30,000 miles on it? Sparks and coils every once in a while is no big deal. To my knowledge the B58 is actually much more powerful than the N55, allowing these stage 2 flashes to not strain the motor as hard.

I am also curious as to how these cars handle road trips (approximately 4-5 hours of driving) every once in a while on the weekends. I don't mind "paying to play", but if it comes down to dealing with headaches every few months that would be a bummer

Based on your concerns you don't have much to worry about. B58 is generally very reliable and there is no data to suggest that a stage 2 ots tune changes this. Also no issues with road-tripping that I have seen reported.

Still, shit happens and you should be prepared to deal with it.

from what I've seen the B58 has proven to be more durable than the N55. Things still break like any car but overall it's as solid as can be.

Garage List
Stage 2 + DP should remain similar to stock levels of reliability- but also is contingent on how hard you thrash the car.
Additional mods and power above that level will start to erode reliability.
I'm at 60K miles with 600whp and just now starting to see some indications of wear and compromised reliability.

There isn't any statistically sound information on whether modifications will reduce reliability of a B58 engine.

This is literally a topic where "your mileage will vary".

One needs to have a different perspective when modifying engines and potentially exceeding the performance envelope specified by the original design.

"You have to pay if you want to play".

Then - there will be no disappointment.

Drive safely and enjoy every mile!
