Brand new 340i rumbling when braking

Hi folks,

Just took delivery of a new 340i. Had about 15 miles on the clock and had been with the dealer for around 6 weeks. Just took it for the first spin on the freeway, and noticed a nasty rumble when braking. Happens at speeds above about 40mph. Nothing noticeable around town.

I’ve had issues like this before but only on worn brakes. Do they just need bedding in, since it was on the forecourt for so long? Likely going back to the dealer, but thought I’d get some opinions first.

Tom

If something doesn't seem right to you on a new car, take it back.

Welcome to the joys of owning a brand new BMW. Will I make it to work today? Hopefully.

Huh? My 3 BMW’s were as reliable as the sun rising in the east. You shouldn’t spread false narratives.

I had issues with my brakes pulsating at 25k miles or so but that was fixed for free. I've had similar issues with Japanese cars as well. So no real difference with bmw.

I've had the after-car-wash slight scraping sound when first driving after the wash but the only "rumble" I've ever had was on a new 280ZX, turns out the bolts on one of the calipers were missing. It separated just as I got to the dealer! Must have been moving and separating slightly as I braked and made the rumble sound. FWIW

To OP, does the rumbling/noise happen every time the brake is applied above 40mph?

Someone at work had similar issue recently and the dealer re-machined the rotors(not sure front or rear) with mobile brake lathe. Apparently dealers got these lathes recently to handle warranty brake issues, so your case may not be uncommon.

Are your BMW's owned or leased, and how long(duration and miles) you have those cars?

It may not apply to all cases, but there seems to be a mentality difference between people leasing versus holding for a long time of what are considered reliable and false narratives.

Just saying.

Yes, every time. Almost certainly has to be the rotor. I'm wondering if being sat on the forecourt for a while, there is some build up on there. Will see what they say, but if it's a rotor issue I'll be expecting new ones vs machining the problem out.

Yes I will ask for new rotors too, although the lathe is pretty cool in action.

Would be the front and most likely has warping from hitting a pot hole most likely

Hitting a pot hole usually hurts the rim instead of rotors.

This article says that heat and aggressive driving does not warp rotors, but instead uneven wear from pads do, and that can be caused by:

1. rotors not installed true to hub, and/or
2. incorrect torque of rotor to hub.

5 brand new BMW's no issues. Never had a breakdown in one. How many new ones have you had breakdowns in?

Doesn’t matter. He claims brand new BMW’s lack reliability.

Long term reliability is not a major issue. Mid pack among all cars.

I mean a growing number of B58 cars appear to be consuming coolant. My tank was dry with less than 1k on the clock. I think everyone is aware that upgraded chargepipes on other cars is pretty much a requirement. And then all the cool timing chain stories i hear from the 4cyl folks. Drivetrain Malfunctions, cracked radiators, etc etc etc. I get that you guys are attached to your BMWs and have good luck but it shouldn't be a surprise that the perception is german cars aren't the most reliable.

When someone makes a post like this, my first thought isn't "OMG, How could that happen? These cars are so bulletproof."

Yes, sorry for the slow reply. They ran a measurement over the rotor and found some deviations out of tolerance. They put down to it sitting on the forecourt for too long without moving. Replaced and running as sweet as a nut. Took it on an inaugural 600 mile round trip and loved every minute of it.

Appreciate the responses, not an ideal start but such is life
