How to run E85?

I just picked up a 2016 328i last night. Is anyone running E85 in these? I did some searching, found threads where people say it needs a full fuel system upgrade, others say only a tune and its good. Gas prices where I am are $5 a gallon, E85 is 2. I usually ran about E50 in my M5 without a tune and it was fine.

The 328i needs an upgraded HPFP IIRC. A tune alone won't help. You might be able to run E10-20 at most without issues?

The n26 Sulev can run full e85 with the stock fuel system, from what I read on Jordan tuned website. In most places, the f3x 328i came with the n20, but some places like California have the n26. Same engine small differences to comply with emissions. I suspect the fuel system is one of these differences in n26 engines, and that is why it is possible to run full e85.

Thanks! I'll check out Jordan tuned. I'm sure stock they can run E40 without an issue. Everyone said the M5 couldn't do it too, i was ran up to E60, maybe E70 a few times without any issues. I don't plan on driving this car hard so supplying enough fuel shouldn't be an issue.

How can you tell if it's an N20 or N26?

There should be a label under the hood. If the car was originally sold in Cali it’ll be an N26.

BootMod3 has E30 blend maps. So you can run E30. Just test your E85 with the test kit and add in enough to be under the E30 mark to stay safe. And PLEASE DATALOG your pulls when doing this to see how your engine is working and if you are having knock or timing issues... This is a sure fire way to blow the motor! Also I would not run e85 long term as the injectors at least pre 2016 were not meant for e85 use nor is the fuel pump and sediments will cause blockage.

TO run e85 you should get a flex fuel kit installed with a gauge to read the fuel content along with a proper fuel pump that can handle e85 without deterioration which causes injectors to get clogged. Also you are playing with fire on a N20/N26 with e85 as the rods will let go cause all the tunes put all the torque at the early part of the RPM range. 4 Bangers need to have a Progressive J curve when tuning to put the power at the top end after 4K to keep the motor otherwise with all the current tunes they cram it all at the 2 to 3K mark and rods bend.

My car with the big turbo is nice and healthy with no issues on stock block as most of the Power is after 3800K. We track it and beat on it on the street.

I completely agree about not using torque in low RPMs. I don't do that and honestly I don't want to increase the boost on this car or anything. I just want to save money. Even when I try to go fast in our M340 now, it feels so slow I think it's broken sometimes. I'm never going to try and go fast in this car, it's just transportation.

I was doing the math on this all tonight and 87 octane from costco is actually cheaper than E85 because you lose ~30% mpg with E85. So I'm going to run E85 mixed with costco 87 octane at E20. E20 shouldn't be enough to cause any issues at all considering they're designed to run at least E10. And that mixture will get the octane up to ~90.

So I am also a bit confused here. I run a tuned N20 stg1 93oct with no hardware (yet).

I wanted to try out some E30 blend or something like that but I have no idea where to start. As far as I an aware you dont need any hardware for E30 right? Where do you buy this stuff? How do you put in the right amount? I probably sound like a noob because I am.

You just go to a fuel station that has E85 and blend in approximately however much you need depending on how much gas you already have in the tank
