Here is a video of mine from cold start up. I start the sound clip by the tail pipes then move to under the car by the front wheels then engine bay and finally back to under car nr front wheels which is where you hear it most. I get this noise from idle on cold but I also hear it slightly when revving engine once warm and while driving with throttle (on enclosed roads where the sound echoes off the surrounding walls or bushes etc).
I had a new wastegate actuator from Germany for £300 as old one was slack. From other videos the wastegate flap can make a noise but that's in the engine bay and sounds similar to a simmering pot. The sound I have almost disappears in sport mode but can hear it faintly still (can live with that). |

Turned the nut towards the front of the car two revolutions. Rattle that was in sport mode is not gone but the rattle in comfort still there (sounds about the same but extremely annoying) I tried to turn the L bracket a bit as well which I do not have in the vid.
I will post the vid in a few hours when I get back home from work.

If you turn the nut one rotation it should be gone in sport. It will eventually come back. I have to see how my finances are and I will most likely get the MHI turbo and have a shop that specializes in turbos rebuild the wastegate flapper/arm so it will be bulletproof.

I will ask my local specialists about a rebuild. He says the turbo is fine and nothing will happen to turbo etc cos of the slack in the wastegate. BUT it's pissing me off. Wonder how it sounds to passers by?

Hey guys,
I went to the dealer today for the noise. I received the car about 2 weeks ago (328iX 2015) and started noticing the waste gate rattle as described in the thread. The dealer's mechanic was looking at me like I was crazy. He drove the car nothing. They agreed to keep the car a couple of hours to let it cool and try again. It was there and louder when Id rev it slightly. He confirmed it's the waste gate and we went inside to see if it's covered by the warranty. But first he wanted to confirm if its normal behavior of the car and took me to see another customers car and same thing the rattle is there but much less. He said it's "A feature of the car" nothing to be fixed and not to worry. Once home I found various threads here and noticed the rod is pretty loose. I could tighten the nut but from what I understand the rattle will just come back later on OR might not get rid of it completely. My question is If I let it get a bit worse and bring it back to the dealer is it going to be covered under the power train warranty (I have 2 more years on warranty) ? Would the problem come back after a while with new turbos ? Thanks |

Rattle is still there. Still there in sport as well. Having a shop install an aftermarket wastegate is the only real fix

Only fix that I see now is a new turbo with a modified wastegate. Then it will be bullet proof.

My F31 has a bit of a rattle on a fully cold start, goes away after idling for a bit. Sounds pretty similar to the videos in this thread.
I was approaching 70K miles so I took it to the dealer to see if it was a wastegate rattle that they'd be able to cover under the CA Emissions warranty, since the Turbo is a covered component. They diagnosed it as the "turbo actuator" (assume that means wastegate actuator) being noisy, and said it was not covered. They said it would be $2400 to replace (lol). I was hoping they'd offer to replace everything under warranty since it's part of the turbo (which is a covered component) but apparently not. Has anyone had luck with that? Should I try another dealer or just not worry about it? I figure I could replace the actuator myself down the line, seems like you can find them pretty cheap, but who knows if that would really fix it. |

Bringing up an old but consistent topic.
Just picked up a '14 328 and wanted noticed play in the wastegate and figured this was the same issue everyone is having? Any fix besides a new turbo or rebuild or is it just "normal"? Thanks! https://www.flickr.com/photos/547758...0p/18fdb8c24c/ |
