318d - “Please refill oil” after 4k miles?

I got the message “ please top up 1 quart of oil”! Only after 4.000 miles! Is this normal?

Not normal of course, as it is diesel it still has dipstick? If yes check that first to make sure that the problem is not the oil level sensor. Do you mean that the car has been driven only 4000 miles in total or after last oil change?

There’s no dipstick in F series diesel

4000 miles after the last oil change (with 90% highway usage)! Last time, i got the “top up” message after 6500 miles.

What engine and year? I thought all diesels still have dipsticks, my 2015 B47 has for sure. It also has electronic measurement in iDrive.

In any case if it has been consuming oil already before then there is an issue which has become worse either mechanically of the new oil affects it. Turbo would be one place where it might get consumed.

Could well be normal. All engine use oil - you'd be a fool to believe otherwise.

B47 still has a dipstick, at the rear of the engine.

I'd be physically checking oil levels, topping off on the dipstick to get a baseline for accurate future consumption.

I assume you are using the most suitable oil grade for your conditions.

Sure but N47 or B47 definitely do not normally use this much. In the family we have both of these engines right now and they barely drop the level at all between oil changes. I have also had N46 and N52 and for those this would be normal.

BMW defines "too much" as 1 quart per 750 miles. Anything less is "normal".

Each engine has different characteristics and usage. Without knowing the *ENTIRE* oil usage for the life of that engine, we have no idea what is normal. We also have no idea what fuel, what oil, whether it's been deleted, if there's a leak that doesn't snow on the ground, etc.

Add a quart and if in 4000 mi it needs more, then raise an eyebrow. At this point it could have been shorted when it was changed.

Look around the engine bay and under the car to confirm there are no leaks.

There’s no leak. I checked my garage in the past 3 days.

I'm at 105,600 and do oil changes between 5000-7500. Only occasionally get the "add a qt" alert around 6000. If that pops up, just to my normal change.

Should I use 5w30 or 0w30?
Because BMW in Europe now sells only 0w30

There's no reason to buy BMW oil. Any and all oils that meet the required specs will do. Those specs are in your owners manual.
