Ugh that DMF is so expensive. I changed out my clutch at around 35k miles and didn't need a new DMF. I think the key is to replace it shortly after it starts slipping.

i had 2 track days earlier this year and was fine. just installed the tu pump last week and flashed bm3 stage 2+ e30 and started slipping sunday. i have another track day saturday and will flash back to stage 2 93 for the event and leave it for a while. i wish luk had a replacement for the dmfw. i probably wont get to replace the clutch until winter and it will be the 550 clutch. i cant believe the flywheel is like 1300-1500$. i had a smfw in my n54 and that shit chattered like a bitch, would not do that again but with the n54 there was talk of knock with to much hp and the dmfw. fwiw i was dyno'd 475 whp in my 135 and the 550 clutch held up to over 30 track days, some of them open track all day with hour long sessions just beating the piss out of the car, never skipped a beat.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I was just wondering if anyone has any idea on
this. So, my clutch has been slipping for a while now and honestly I probably should have just replaced it right when it started but I've been just taking such a long time deciding if I wanted to the 335IS/550I upgraded clutch or to just get the SPEC 2+ clutch and flywheel. The car is a 2017 340 Xdrive on MG Flasher Stage 1 and has about 42,000KM on it but even anything more then 60-70% throttle it will slip in 3rd at about 3k RPMS. I seriously thought that it wouldn't start slipping this bad as many others were able to go stage 2 and not have any issues and my last BMW 330ci made it to about 180,000KM and still does not really experience any slippage. Only on my second vehicle i've owned so I guess I was just being naïve. I originally thought I was gonna do a lot more mods the on car so I thought I would just upgrade to the SPEC 2+ clutch and flywheel but as time goes on this car might be more of a daily driver for me then a project as I will most likely get another vehicle in a couple more years. It's probably been about 5000KM since the car has started slipping and has only gotten worse. I imagine because it slipping so bad my flywheel might be in terrible condition as well but i'm still wondering if it would be possible to resurface this and then use the 335/550 clutch? (From what i've researched recently most shops don't seem to resurface a DMFW) If I were to replace it with another OEM DMFW + the 335/550 clutch it would probably end up costing the same if not more then the SPEC 2+ kit so I would just get that if I'm not able to re-use the stock flywheel. Sorry for the questions as I know its been answered that the transmission basically hasn't been changed but since I'm not too mechanically inclined I'm wondering if flywheel is a direct fit as well? Just been having such a hard time finding ways to get a clutch + flywheel shipped to Canada without costing me over $3000-4000 + possible customs. I would just upgrade to the spec stage 2+ if I plan for getting more power in the future but honestly pretty happy with where i'm at already so if I could save some money by doing a LUK clutch + flywheel it would be the best but can't seem to find anything on these flywheels on rockauto or I'm searching under the wrong vehicle. Even then finding shipping for spec clutch + flywheel seems to have been an issue as well. Thanks Edit Well I guess after doing some research it seems the flywheel isn't the same. So I guess my main issue is just finding a flywheel at the moment that isn't gonna cost me $1500. Last edited by Aipx; 09-08-2021 at 10:40 PM.. |

Just some data for your guys. I made over 600whp with my 550i clutch and further confirmed that it can hold up to ~600ft lbs, so keeping torque below that will help it hold and still allow good performance. For reference, 600ft lbs at redline is almost 800whp.

I did buy all new bell housing bolts. I'm basically replacing everything involved with the clutch that BMW recommends. Since it's a big job and all the extra small parts like pivot pin and clip bell housing, pressure plate and flywheel bolts as well as all the fluids in transmission, differential and transfer case aren't that expensive I figured I might as well. But I'm one to always do the "while I'm in there" maintenance on my cars.

New to this convo…
I just had a shop install the LUK 550i clutch and it went really smooth. I drove it home 15 miles. When I get home I’m backing up in the driveway and all of the sudden the clutch won’t release and I can’t get into any gear. If I turn off the engine it shifts easily between gears. Kern417 suggested to re-bleed the clutch and the shop tried that, both manually pumping clutch and power bleed. Nothing. So they are suggesting the DMF might be the culprit. Any idea of a failing DMF would cause this? Any other ideas we can try? Thanks everyone Todd 2016 340i xDrive, 6 speed |

I'm installing a 550i clutch in a few weeks. I'm Mhd stg 2+ e40 and my clutch can't get the power down. The luk clutch kit seems b/o'd but the oem clutch kit is only 100 bucks more.

I'm running an oem 550i clutch kit and putting 513tq to the ground without issue. My tu pump was the end of my stock clutch. Best part is the price. Sourced the clutch kit for less than 500 then the labor wasn't horrible. The 550i clutch holds 600-ish tq they say. I like the feel of it too. Better than than the 340i clutch.

550i clutch and DMFW here on a custom BM3 tune by Cary Jordan. Butt dyno says 350whp/400ftlb and it holds excellent (this is a very rough estimation based on peak boost being 23psi)

Thanks @G.Newt
I didn’t realize that those 6 part numbers where the ones to order. Do you know they DMFW part # or how to find the right one compatible with these parts? Is 8.5 hours of labor right for this job? |
