Cool to see the states getting a track more dedicated for straight performance like the Nuremberg uses. Highlight of my tour here in Europe so far is getting 5 laps on the that track!!
Good to see the 335 still holding it's name strong for a solid sports sedan, also gota give credit to the Camaro for coming in just under a second to the GT500. |

The Camaro really is impressive... even the SS had great lap times. It's also good to see the C63 BS up there with the big guns... it is an impressive car too.

Added the E92 M3 time (3:05.4) and 1M coupe time (3:06.6) from last year's competition, for reference.

It may be upsetting that somebody could probably burn you at a stop light with their Hyundai, but let's face it - they're sitting inside of a plastic solo cup with an engine. (I'm very pro Hyundai/Kia by the way, they've made massive leaps and bounds - I seriously considered a Gen Coupe before going to the 3) I'm most surprised about the GT500/ZL1...would've expected the new GT to be faster. That also means that ZL1 is a heck of a bargain.

The Gene has about the same weight, more hp(probably less tq though).

My biggest disappointment is that the 335i has gained ZERO power (and in fact lost about 20hp up top) over 7 model years. Quote:
GT500 is a load faster in the straight line. The ZL1 has a superior suspension...same shocks as the ZR1. |

I don't know. Professional drivers must be able to come up with magic because I have drove the GT500 and the Camaro SS and there handling is lacking compared to the 3 series. They are great muscle cars but nose dive into the turns.

The Genesis is lighter, has more hp and about the same tq. If anything the 335i should have been beaten by the Genesis.
The 335i time is about the same as the 135i. The S4 is about 3s faster but that car has a performance oriented awd system and more hp/tq. This is not a bad result for the 335i.

I looked at some of the historical figures from last year and was thoroughly disappointed at the numbers BMW is putting out compared to some of the Chevy's and Fords. I expected straight line performance to be slower, but for the 'ultimate driving machine' to out class them on the track.
The thing that stood out the most was the Ford Mustang V6 and it basically equaling the 335i on the track. That seems ridiculous. For some reason I expected the 335i to keep up with the Mustang GT and Camaro SS, but that doesn't seem to be the case. And not sure what's up with the 335is being slower than the new 335i either, but the old 335i being faster (they talked about how much faster the early models were compared to the later ones, 2008ish vs later models). Sadly the M3 isn't much faster (about 3 seconds) than the old Mustang GT, and I suspect would be slower than the current model as the new SS Camaro is about 3 seconds faster than the M3 (while costing about $30k less, talk about performance per $$$). The new Camaro ZL1 and Shelby GT500 just spank any of the M's, which just makes me sad since they cost substantially less. All that talk about the American cars being too heavy and the Mustang's dated live axle should just die now because they're just beasts in both a straight line and on the track, not to mention cheap. You can actually buy a ZL1 for about what you pay for a loaded 335i. For reference: Time / Car / Date 2.57.5 / Camaro ZL1/ New 3.00.6 / Shelby GT500 / New 3:01.5 / Camaro SS / New 3:05.4/ BMW M3/ Feb 2011 3:08.6/ Mustang GT 5.0 / Feb 2011 3:09.5/ Camaro SS / Feb 2010 3:10.5/ BMW 335i Coupe/ August 2007 3:13.2/ BMW 335i / New 3:13.3/ Ford Mustang V6 / Feb 2011 3:13.8/ BMW 335is / Feb 2012 Last edited by tdizzle; 12-30-2012 at 11:03 AM.. |

Am I the only one wondering what suspension the 335i was running?
If it was base, then this is a good time. If it was Sportline, it's a bit underwhelming...

HOWEVER ... fill in the gaps. Let's just say I had no problem having a car that costed DOUBLE to his and he had no problem keeping the car that costed HALF. Different strokes for different folks. Heck, even my Jetta TDI 5MT can take most of those corners at the same speed ... but the FEEL is absolutely and completely different. Some idiots (like myself) are willing to pay for that feel, even if the numbers say it ain't so

At first I didn't believe all the hype of the 5.0 when it came out being basically a M3 level performer at half the cost. If the interior/fit and finish would have been anywhere near what the F30/Audi's felt like I'd probably have picked one up myself instead of my car. |
