cracked dashboard

good morning f30 family.....

so this morning i'm going out for a coffee run... and i look down at my speedometer and i see a huge line running across it. its roughly 4.5 inches across. At first i thought it was the shadow of something in the car. But upon closer inspection, the plastic cover that resides over the instrument cluster/gauges appears to be scratched/cracked. I ran my finger over it and cannot really feel anything which leads me to believe it happening from the inside.

My questions, and i apologize if this has been covered previously....

a) has anyone else encountered this issue? cold weather causing the crack?
i have never used anything other than microfiber cloths and swiffer dusters on my interior.
b) i'm assuming that they should have no problems covering this under warranty. It kind of reminds me of the people with the cracked 1-8 memory presets

I tried my best to get a photograph of it.. but my iphone couldn't really focus in on the issue.

my first BMW and i'm like "really???" but i guess things could be worse right?

Any chance you took your car through a car wash recently? Valet park it somewhere?

Sounds more like something a human did to your car, not the elements.

Not sure if you see it
Car has never been valeted
Never been driven by anyone except me
Never detailed or washed by anyone but be. I think I do a decent job of taking care of her. This is a total surprise to me

Damn that's kind of noticeable. I hope it's a crack cuz I would think they'd replace that no questions asked. But a scratch...they might try to say you did it.

A scratch can be polished out, the crack can't be fixed. The lens is pretty easy to replace.

Wow that is bad! Thank you for the picture.
Well, i have seen a thread where a side window busted in the middle of driving out of nowhere somewhere on the forum. It could be just a faulty screen from factory?
Bet that doesn't happen often. Stop by a gas station after you get it fixed at a dealer. Time for a lotto lol
Keep us posted on this. Good luck!

Never heard of that one before. Interested to see how much grief the dealer will give you.

Dealer didn't have an appointment (with a loaner provided) until jan 7 2015. So I will report back then. Even if it's a scratch... Shouldn't the lens be a little more durable than that? I used a swiffer duster for crying out loud. If they refuse to replace it I will leave it be then. It's a lease so when I give it back they can deal with it then.

If it is a scratch what is the best way to go about buffing it out?

What dealer is this? A month for an appointment sounds like Bayside.

You are good mike... Lol
If I didn't require a loaner I could have brought it in this week. It's not something that needed to be fixed ASAP so I didn't mind waiting,

I'd like to revive this 1+ year old thread. What was the outcome after the dealer took a look at this?

I have a one inch crack in the bottom of mine and its driving me nuts. I took it to a local dealership and they said it was not covered under warranty... hummmmbugg. I'm trying to see what my options are since this was CPO purchased in early April 2016....

Thanks!

There are a few threads detailing how to remove it. IIRC, it's only held on by 2 torx screws. Plastic part like that is probably relatively cheap as well.

Reviving this ! does anyone know if possible to replace JUST the clear plastic cover to the instrument cluster?

Doesn't look like it to me, but wondering if possible. I have a small blemish on mine in my M4.

If you look on Realoem there are only 2 part numbers for the instrument cluster so you can't buy just the cover but only as a whole unit.

If it's just a blemish, try using a polishing compound and polish it out.

It does kinda look like a scratch. Did you have your car washed or service anywhere? Or did you loan it out to someone?

3500 miles and you swearing up and down that one day it was "just like that", and the dealer should replace it under warranty.

Nuts--someone bumped the thread and I didn't realize. I was wondering why his signature said he had an X5, and the pic of the dash showed pre-LCI instruments.

Just had my lens/cluster replaced three days ago. Unfortunately they cannot (or so they say) replace only lens. Mine was fogged up on the inside and this was taken care of under warranty. All coding done was wiped out but the place that did it let me know upfront that re-programming car down the road by BMW was a possibility and they would re-code for $50.
