Battery discharging while stopped

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hello all. I have a 2014 428I XDrive with 20,000 Miles. I am getting an error “ Battery discharging while stopped” on screen and “Increased battery discharge” on dash when I start car. I also get a message in the morning saying something like “electrical stuff was shit off to conserve battery” or something like that.
One friend said that a software update might fix the problem.
Anyone have any tips ?
Full disclosure - the car has a reconstructed title from Fla. I was told that the damage was from collision, not flood. This company has been in business a long time and has a 100% rating.

You probably need to have all of the electronic modules checked out.

I have been having the same problem on my 2014 435i. I live in NJ and didnt start my car for a weekend cause I was away and sure enough I needed to jump my car. Ive been really coasting around lately to help charge the battery. Thinking of buying a better quality battery in the near future to make sure this doesnt keep happening. I also have subs installed in my car... not sure if that effects how much battery is used tho

But yeah i noticed leaving my car idle and coasting around to charge the battery has helped a little. Let me know what you end up doing! good luck!!

Most likely the car needs a new battery...they last between 3 and 5 years. I'll probably need to replace mine before long, as it's still the original from 1/2013 manufacture date. It is also possible that the car had its battery replaced without coding so the charging system isn't working correctly - that may be what your friend is talking about. Coding is necessary to let the "intelligent" charging system know that it has a fresh battery and not one that is near end-of-life.

+1

Best place to start is to have the battery checked.

a new battery is a must! is often very cold where you live?
switching off the star stop may also help!

May need to invest in a battery maintainer to charge the battery.

The alternator only charges when braking. Best to have it checked out.

Thank you all for the replies. I simply put a battery charger on car and have maintained dicipline of locking car every time I exit and keep key fob out of range. You can search forum and see that there are systems that stay active after car is parked unless you lock car. Not sure if key fob in range of a locked car will still keep some systems active so I set key fob farther away. Sucks to lock car in garage but not really a big deal. (I live in a small and safe community where my wallet and keys can remain in car in the summer)
I will likely have to charge on weekends for peace of mind.
I have other issues to deal with now. Whoever put these run flats on rims damaged the bead. 2 are bad so I am going to non run flats. I already replaced one run flat and soon after another is leaking. To top it off, these are not the best tire in snow. I happen to live in the snowiest location in the USA.
In addition, my area lays down the most salt in the US on the roads and my windshield washers only work some of the time. I am hoping that the fluid they put in while in Fla was not suited for where I live.(3 degrees this am)

Another tip, I usually shut off most electric devices a few blocks before destination. Heater, seats, steering wheel... shut off well before I park car.
