It is crazy how much many of us spend on cars.

As I get closer to 50 than 40 I have started to think about it a bit more, I'm 46 now.

I had to pull out of my pension scheme in 2010, financially couldn't afford it.
I have just got a quote to start again, retiring at 67, I now need to pay in £2600 a month with work contributing £4000 a year to have £34k a year pension.

I think back to all the years where I have had 2 cars on finance, costing £700+ a month and all I can think is "You twat!".
That is just £700 on payments, then you add in the £400 in fuel, £100 insurance, £100 upkeep for both and you are looking at the best part of £15000 a year on motoring, that is the first £25k of wage gone on cars.

I crunched some numbers and realised my excessive car spending over the years has cost me dearly, if I had been far more sensible in my 20s and 30s I could have retired at 55 maybe even 53.
If I then add in what I have wasted on HiFi and Home Cinema, cameras, the latest phones and macbooks etc. etc. I could have probably retired at 45.

Oh, well, in it till I'm 67 now, may as well grab an M340i Touring I guess. Haha

I control the bills I can control so I can have a nice car, a nice house and good holidays. Not controlling all those other bills means we'd have to miss out on something.

Plus, in my life and in my job it just seems to make sense to control costs if you can. It's not hardship to do it. In fact if I'm negotiating something down I enjoy the process. I understand that others don't.
Nope, hate haggling, in fact I dont do it. Tell them what I am happy with and walk if they dont do it. Dont care about £10 here or £20 there if it gets in the way of doing what I want to do - life is bloody short and I would rather not waste time and just do what I can.

We all have to control costs - I guess its how much time and effort you want to put in to that. When the kids were little, we just didnt have stuff, as I spent the money on them and doing what we could for them with one income. Now I am a bit more fortunate and I am not going to get excited about saving a couple of quid if it takes up time and my attention when I could be spending it with my kids, grandson - or prepping for the one on the way in the next couple of weeks.

We all have different priorities, that's cool. I know lots of people who think I am a tight fisted git as I wont buy costa or starbucks or similar as a waste of money - and I walk across London and save the £5 a day.... as well as walking to the station despite having 2 cars to save £8.50 parking!

You can make your choices, but I dont have to agree....

Nope, you don't. But you also don't have to tell people that you don't understand why people care about £20, £30, £50 here and there, when in other parts of your life you care about £5 on the tube, or £3 in Starbucks.

Ps. Thanks for the coffee, I'd have brought a flask and two cups if I'd known!

Now this is a step too far. This kind of logic has no place on a BMW forum.

That does sound a bit crazy - between you and your work, you will be contributing £35,200 a year for 21 years, in order to receive £34,000 a year for around the same term - approx 21 years.

You generally expect investments to generate a return some way above inflation, but this seems to be just about keeping pace with inflation.

But that is like telling you not to argue with everything, you know you don't have to but well, you still do!

The truth is, I don't care about those things, knew it when I got the car and its how it is. But also accept that is just me and others are different.

Social coffee is OK, its the "I must have my skinny double shot, cinnamon macchiato on the way to work" shit that bothers me....

Pensions. Another area of confused government policy....

If we didnt spend on life we could have a really good period before death. Or you can do shit when you are younger and have less when you are older...

Like you my pension wont be enough when I retire - well not to have a new car every two years, two holidays, blah blah. But I'll probably be too old to make the best of it... so I'll have the car I want now instead.....

Cool, I guess we can all carry on spending as you were* in fact spend a little more, Honda Jazz is only worth changing every 5 years probably. Nipping to the shops, not for food but to tut tut at young people.

EDIT1: Literally the firstt 2 Honda Jazz pictures I could find.
EDIT2: After posting the 2nd pic, pension fund also needs to account for 'ahem' blue pills.

As usual for me sorry. So back on the M340i I assume everyone is keeping track of TRLs deals as a value barometer. If not...you probably should.

Yes, keeping an eye on his website! It will take more than a sub-17% discount to tempt me but as the Touring is a brand new model I'm hoping the level of dealer and manufacturer support will increase in the coming months....

If that's the price of financial independence, it's too high.

Great info Chris, but I keep thinking why would you get a M340i touring for that when you can have the X3M and all its 510hp for less...

Damn that deal! It's going round and around my head.

Should reach 20%+ within 12 months. One carwow dealer offered me 10% last week and they're always piss poor.

6 months easily I'd say. BMW pricing is just set unrealistic on purpose to discount.

Easily 20% after 6 months and 3rd Qtr on sale.

Resist and wait it out

Yes, keeping an eye on his website! It will take more than a sub-17% discount to tempt me but as the Touring is a brand new model I'm hoping the level of dealer and manufacturer support will increase in the coming months....
Should reach 20%+ within 12 months. One carwow dealer offered me 10% last week and they're always piss poor.
6 months easily I'd say. BMW pricing is just set unrealistic on purpose to discount.

Easily 20% after 6 months and 3rd Qtr on sale.

Resist and wait it out
Will do, sir!! Normally start to get tempted at around 23-24%
In the build up to the Oct 31 brexit date, one carwow dealer offered me a time limited deal of over 26% on a fully loaded 5 series. That's carwow, ffs.
Patience and determination win the day
