New Car Ordered

Not a Tesla like I thought it would be, but another BMW.

X5 45e M-Sport in arctic grey as company car.

Options:

Pro Pack
Tech Pack Plus
Tow bar

Hoping the electric only range will do most of my commute but love the blend of 3.0 petrol and electric for performance and unlimited range when needed.

Sold on it by Harry Metcalfe:

Looking forward to trying the Driving Assistant Professional in the daily grind once traffic gets back to usual.

Interesting footage of one at the Ring:

Now for the wait....

Nice one, great that you work for a business still willing to hand out 75-80k company cars.

Superb choice. Shocking range on a PHEV and B58

Lovely choice. The best SUV drivetrain out there, I'm sure (not that I've driven one!).

Great choice. Why BMW don’t offer that drive train in more models and body styles I don’t know...

Agree but just size and weight and a certain price it will invite I'd think.

745e
X5 45e
545e

I'd love to see an M145e but I'm not sure it would carry a 2000kg car weight and I6

545e touring would be nice.. a 345e touring would be even better. At least they offer a good engine in hybrid form - Audi only give you a 4 pot or nothing...

I agree, I think BMW have got it about right, suits a big wafting luxury car. Still more engine choice than a lot of manufacturers across the range.

Don’t see much value in getting it in a 3 series when the 330e sells by the bucket load, and if you’re a petrol head there’s the M340i. Sure there’d be a few sales, but at the price it would demand, can’t see it being many.

Agree on the 545e touring, as long as long as boot space wasn't compromised. Would almost certainly have taken it over the 540i

It kind of beggars belief that Range Rover went for a four for their PHEV, too. The RRS Autobiography was an absolute library on wheels in electric mode, the calmest car I have ever been in. The four kicking in and revving to 3/4/5k rpm was like some bugger firing up a drill in the library. I can imagine how brilliant the B58 must be in that sort of installation.

I am not surprised they don’t offer a 345e, but with the way BIK has gone in the UK it might encourage some to opt back in...

Lack of 545e T is a more serious omission but fits with BMWs historic view regarding estates and lack of options...

It might not be down to that alone. The Saloon loses 120 litres of boot space, making it smaller than the 3 series. They probably figure people don’t care as much in a saloon.

An estate, presumably bought for boot space mainly, seems a little pointless if it then loses so much. Although reports I’ve read say there may be one in the future.

Well there is now a 330e T, so let’s hope so. Not that it will affect me for a few years

Makes sense. Aside from the fact that estates are the coolest thing this side of a last gen Vantage , boot size is key. Reduce that, and there is no point in getting one

The issue is that the others don't have the same very large battery and cannot hit the minimum miles on all electric that drops the X5 into the 6% BIK.

I also considered the Merc GLE 350 de as an alternative. Probably a better cruiser with an even bigger battery at 33kw mated to a diesel for better overall economy.

But I prefer the looks of the X5 and the ability to switch from electric cruising to a more dynamic petrol car when I wanted was the key. I wanted a change from diesel. The B58 really swung it, but I note it is not the full fat version with "only" 280bhp.

Will be interesting to see if they mate the PHEV to the 40i motor at some point! DMS will remap 45e's but no way would I mess with a hybrid because there do still seem to be some issues with batteries and chargers.

The only major downside is that they have put a pathetic charger in the X5 so the idea of recharging on a journey is out. Albeit from recent reports the cost of the electricity away from home or office is often more than the petrol would be!

I did look all electric and really came to conclusion that if that was the option it had to be Tesla at this juncture and to suit my needs for space and range the Model X was just too expensive.....

Agree with second part. Don’t like look of estates though.

Better than the fugly X3 I purchased though.

Clubman is a kind of Mini estate I suppose, but Mini was wife’s choice and the Clubman was about as good as I could make a Mini look, given our choice had to be at least 4 doors.

Estates are definitely the best looking, obviously why Audi only make their best cars in the best shape...

I don’t need a car as big as an X5 but if we had a co car option I would be in a 45e. It’s a great option. Remind me, you do get the BIK rate even if you never charge it up?

Yes, but the EV use and cheap / green miles is a key part of this for me as I do a high mile commute. Currently sorting out which chargers to get installed at the right time...

And before people make the point our home and office supplies are all from sustainable generation so the X5 will not be an effective coal / gas / nuclear vehicle.

You absolutely do. We have a couple of the older hybrid X5’s at work and the guys claim their miles at cost. So they never charge it up at home as it costs them money.

And your Audi argument is weak on a BMW forum, where BMW never make their best cars estates

Yep, a couple of guys at my last place had XC90 T8s one returned it with the charging cable unused!

Audi clearly care what cars look like, I mean it’s obvious BMW only care about the Chinese now...
