In the BMW world I don't know. With VW and Audi's, it's rumored the dealership can tell if the ECU's been flashed when they hook it up to their diagnostic computers. There is a checksum bit that is advanced every time the ECU is flashed. If the number doesn't match what VW/Audi thinks it should be, it gets flagged.

My comments should have said "mods" rather than tuned. Some cars I looked at the seller freely mentioned an ECU tune, while many others had suspension mods etc or an exhaust.

Every N55 I've owned I instantly change out the charge pipe for aluminum. It's more of preventative than performance if anything.
I might be OK with an aftermarket charge pipe, but not an intercooler. My biggest concern with any of those types of mods is the quality of the part and the quality of the installer. Any used car is a crap-shoot since you don't know what's been wrenched on in the past, but obvious things like a charge pipe or major component like an intercooler would make me nervous. If everything is OEM and looks to be original, there is far less to question.

Roger that. No way I am buying a modded car. If the OP, or anyone else, wants to swap whatever they want, go for it. Just do it b/c you want it, not b/c anyone else is going to pay anything more (or less) for it when you sell.

You must've never blown a charge pipe Lucky. I've blown both my twice on stock. Makes you question why BMW went with the flimsy plastic design. Either way, this is really the only mod I'd be happy to see on my car.

Anything else, I agree with you.

Sounds like you are already counting down to selling. You are going to limit the number of potential buyers, and so the potential price you might receive for your car, if you attempt to sell with anything except M Performance parts on it. So if that is your concern then don't install anything that you cannot easily swap back off
Hey, actually dont plan on selling for like 5 years. Just got the car 6 months ago, and wanted to be real careful before I do any performance mods on the car (if any at all)
If you intend to keep the car for five years then don't bother worrying about how each mod might affect resale. After five more years of depreciation and mileage no normal mods that you do to the car will have any real impact on what you can sell the car for in 2025.

Just mod the car anyway that you like and enjoy driving it for the next five years.

No matter what you do... a Honda or a Toyota with the same year vintage as your car will sell for more😂

Fortunately, I have not. My E90 made it 150k+ and my current F32 only has 4500 miles on it. It it failed by now, I'd be really mad.
