Stuck with the MAP Upgrade

Hi Guys,

I would like to know the steps to convert my CIC (Car is a 116i - 2012 Model) to ECE. I have just created my account and so, PM might be disabled. Any help would be highly appreciated. I am located at Auckland too. My Rego is QJY132.

1) Install CIC
2) Modify FA Language and Option Codes from Asian to Australian
3) Flash CIC with Modified FA
4) Write cloned ECE HDD Image to CIC HDD
5) Wipe Donor FSC Codes
6) Load original VIN Matching FSC Codes
7) Pull 1B FSC Code from CIC and generate Australia PREMIUM map FSC Codes
8) Install Australia PREMIUM map

Would be far easier to just retrofit an ECE CIC or NBT Unit.

Hi Shawn, I'm attempting to convert a Japanese import Supra to take a New Zealnd map, from my research online it seems you might be the best person to talk to about this, I work at a dealership so have the current map for setting up maps at pdi on new Supra's, the way the FSC is accessed after requesting now through ista doesn't give me an option to download the fsc to usb. I've been changing a lot of other things through bimmercode. Do you know if there is something particular I need to change in the nav setup or do I need to access an fsc some other way etc. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

Not as simple as just installing Australia EVO Map. Before Australia EVO Map can be installed, you need to either:

1) Convert Head Unit from Asia to ECE, which requires flashing with modified FA Country Controller and Language option codes, and then update OEM FSC Codes for Navigation Application, and Navigation Map, and iSpeech.

2) Use aftermarket Patch, full set of custom FSC Codes, Regional Unlock, and Regional Coding.

Your PM function is disabled. Send one when enabled.

Oh damn, that doesn't sound straightforward at all. So not something that can be achieved using bimmercode.

Oh bugger, I was hoping it might be easy enough as back in 2019 we had to convert the European maps on the new cars as they arrived in the country to an NZ/AUS map and that was quite easy. Presumably there is some fundamental difference in the destination coding between the euro spec and Japan spec. I did notice you can change the Navi variant to ece in bimmercode ok, but when you try to change the navi Country the coding always fails. Oh well the customer may have to just live with it and use Carplay instead. Thanks for your help on this 👍

Yes. The difficulty is only when going from Asian (Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan) to non-Asian or vice versa. After market solution simplifies it compared to OEM. Keep in mine CarPlay Navigation is not integrated into Instrument Cluster / HUD.

Hi everybody! Good to be back in the car enthusiasts community! I used to drive Japanese cars in past, but decided to go with german car this time. And wow, I'm so in love with my F20! Got a Japan import (to Ireland) of only 65k km on the clock. All original (even rear tyres were still runflats came with the car lol), so I want to make sure I preserve it in a great shape and get some extras where possible.

So! I really want the basic stuff - radio programmed for EU band and Maps working and updated (NBT). I've ordered the enet cable. So the question is - do I need to reflash the maps completely or a simple region code change would do the job? I need an FSC - that's clear, hopefully shawnsheridan the legend can help me with that. Not sure how to get OEM FSC though

NBT needs to be flashed with modified FA. Your PM function is disabled. Send one when enabled.

Thanks, shawnsheridan I should have my PM functional working tomorrow hopefully. I have some bad news, though I tried to update the software via USB, downloaded file from BMW site, installing went ok but after restart the screen gets frozen on the intro animation and then in some time I get the No Signal message. Hard restart doesn't help. Did the update brick the HU completely or can this be fixed? Do you know by any chance? Tryend to understand if it makes sense to attempt restoring it or should I order the replacement HU right away

Just a side note FYI when changing country code from another country for use in NZ.

Do Not change the country code to Aust (810)

Simply remove the “original” country code from the FA.

Change the language version to 853 “English” if ex Japan etc.

When the HU is set to Aust (810) the radio RDS will not work correctly. The radio will not hold stations when driving from region to region, and will display station frequencies rather than RDS names. (AF function)

NZ uses the ECE RDS AF standards, Australia seems to use a different AF functional standard.

You can have 810 in FA, but change FDL coding “radio version” to ECE from AUS to function correctly for NZ.

I have no idea what you downloaded from BMW site. This is likely just the Bluetooth Update, and should not have caused any issue. It's a moot point really, as you still need to flash the Head Unit with Modified FA for Region conversion. PM sent.

Just an update from my side - the BMW update USB stick bricked my NBT unit. It went into the boot loop after update finished. ISTA and Esys didn't see my HU ECU at the end, and restoring it seems to be only possible on the bench. I saw others reporting similar issues and the other guy managed to resurrect it by disconnecting the HDD, which allowed the HU to boot and be reflashed in Esys and then restoring the HDD data with an image restore. Might be because my car is Jap import, but then I wonder why iDrive accepted the update in a first place. Anyway, I ended up changing the HU to NBT Evo eventually and now enjoying car play with all stock other equipment.

NBT to NBT evo update is fairly easy - some sellers on eBay sell upgrade kits with LAN connector and wifi antenna + voltage converter for the stock screen. Mine was pre-programmed to my car's VIN with the latest maps installed, so I only had to repin a few connectors and it all works like a charm now. There's no need to change the screen and the idrive controller really unless you want a larger screen/touchscreen. The only thing - I'm missing the <- and -> buttons indication in my 6wb cluster for BT song change, but this is fairly minor issue and potentially might be fixed by updating the cluster firmware

So, NEVER update your idrive with a BMW USB flash ROM. It doesn't worth it
