Anyone Replaced the SCR Line?

2014 328 msport 91k.

I have codes showing that my SCR metering line heating element has finally died. From my research it looks like the heating elements (unsure of the correct terminology) is part of the line and the whole line needs to be replaced. Curious if anyone has replaced this before and what the job was like? Don't believe it is covered under any extended warranty so I am going to bite the bullet and DIY or go buzzken.

Thanks in advance!

Let me know if you need some assistance. I was thinking if there was a way to cut and patch instead of replace the whole line.

FWIW, you don't need to actually buy a different pipe for DEF systems. The DEF brick is not intrusive or restrictive at all. It's completely separate of the dpf. They are completely separate systems.

Would love to pick your brain on this as well. Was wondering the same, or figure out what exactly is causing the heater fault and fix it instead of replacing the whole line!

I have a '15 X3 with the N47, and I'm getting 80518A and 8051C0, both "metering line heating, activation: Line disconnecton."

I searched this forum and came across this thread: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1572306

ISTA directive for my codes are:
1.Check the line and plug connections
2. Replace the SCR metering module

I've not taken action yet, I'm confused because the problem description I have is for the line, but the directive is to replace the module and not the line. Seems to me that the line heating is achieved by the module, or at least it could be if this is truly the path of repair. But the SCR module isn't very cheap, so I intend to check the line and plug connections first.

Anyways, subscribing for the discussion.

As far as I know, the "heating line" isn't really a heated line. It's a signal line that connects to the SCR module, and there is a heating element inside the SCR module. If that's faulty, you'll get the error.

You'd typically only get this error if it's colder out and the heating element can't be turned on for the SCR. Whether that's because of a short in the connection/line itself or whether the SCR module heating element is faulty, I don't think it knows enough to distinguish (experts, please correct me if mistaken).

Since we're coming into Spring now, I would delete the error code and keep trucking along. You won't need the heater until next winter anyway.

This - Code went away when I left CT and got warmer here in VA. Need to repair this and plan for winter, but like the above poster I am unsure if it is the line or the module I need to replace. From my understanding my issue is most likely the line, but, not 100%

At least for my codes, they continue to reappear even in warm weather (65F today, tried it again and it came right back on).

Maybe because your code shows disconnected and mine shows just not being able to heat? Not sure why, I didnt even have to clear mine, the CEL just went off...

You're probably right. Must be similar to a bulb voltage check, it's happening at every startup

May have spoke too soon. Light is back on this AM. Will scan it later and report back.

I had it turn off by itself once as well, only to come back. The last time it came back, I used BimmerLink to reset the error and force a regen.

It did not come back after that. I know the 2 systems are technically independent, but the car likes BOTH to be working properly or you're likely to see the dash light back on.

Edit: in other news, my Bluetec has gone in for the approved emissions modification today. It's getting a bunch of new parts and new software installed.

Does Bimmerlink allow you to prime the fuel pump after fuel filter replacements on the 328d? If so I need to invest. Trying to decide between bimmer link and protool

I don't believe it does. It allows you to force DPF regens, register new battery and cycle the parking brakes so you can replace the rear pads, but no fuel pump priming or other "advanced" options. But it's a very cheap and useful scan tool nonetheless.

You might need a Foxwell tool (I should probably invest in one as well...)

Same codes as I had above, so the light going off was just a tease.

So - Back to the drawing board. Was going to order parts today. Does the group this that my codes:

805212 / Intermittent - Metering Line Heating activation upper limit exceeded.

805268 / Intermittent - Recirculating Pump unit, activation: Not Plausible

8051 C5 - Metering line heating, activation: Short circuit to ground.

Refer to the line: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...ne-16197260228

Or should I plan to replace the module as well? Dont want to just start throwing parts at this thing.

From what I could tell, the SCR sprayer (the module) itself can be removed but you'll need a special tool for 3 of the screws. I've read that folks have removed it, cleaned up the spray ports of accumulated crystalized DEF and continue using it with no faults.

However, other than directly testing ohm/resistance of the plug and comparing to known values, it would be impossible to tell whether the module heating element has failed or whether the line has a break in it somewhere.

FWIW, when I had the X3 in at the dealer for recall work, they quoted me around $1200 to replace the line, based on the error code I had (your last code). It appears they would replace the line and not the module, unless the line turned out not to be the problem after all.

YMMV.

What ended up fixing it on your X3? My BMW tech buddy is leaning towards the line as well... Fairly cheap off FCPeuro too which is nice.

Do you have ISTA? It might give you a little more clarity. Or like in my case, less clarity

I don't, but I guess I need to invest. I can't even figure out how to get my foxwell to prime my fuel pump after a fuel filter replacement...

It helps that I can do a regen whenever, and I also keep it garaged where it's warm. I haven't had any issues with it since the last reset and regen.

The error did say it was intermittent, so maybe one of the many undercarriage washes helped?
