Car is 340i xDrive

I bought a new winter setup. I ordered 255/35R19 for the rear but TireRack mistakenly shipped 265/35R19.

Front: 19x8.5 225/40R19
Rear: 19x9.5 265/35R19

The top photo (grainy) is the 225/265 setup.

The diameter on the 265/35R19 is 26.3" and the 225/40R19 is 26.1", a 0.8% difference, and it looks burly, so I went with it.

Attached are photos from my staggered summer setup (bottom photo, higher quality):

Front: 19x8.5 225/40R19
Rear: 19x9.5 255/35R19

The question is, is this 225/265 setup OK?

From the pics, it does seem like the rear of the car is a bit higher. Would this unsettle the car? It does seem as if the car has a little bit of lateral wiggle going over large bumps above 40 mph. But this could be all in my head.

My options are:

1. Keep 225/265
2. Toss the 265 and put on 255/35R19
3. Toss the 225 on the front and put on 235/40R19
4. This is all in my head. These aren't the droids I'm looking for, move along.

I have not seen any DSC lights or had any noticeable xDrive issues (I've driven over 1000 miles already).

the fat 265's from the rear. Yeah, they look good, which is why I didn't send them back for 255's... I'd like to believe everything is fine with the 225 / 265 setup.

I ditched the 265/35R19 and put on the stock 255/35R19

With the 265/35R19 I noticed a few hitching/jerking issues accelerating over bumps. Plus the general bounciness of the rear end.

Once the 255s were on, the ride and handling of the car immediatley improved.

An expensive mistake... I’m not entirely sure what caused the issues. The Tire Size calculator says the diameter difference between 225 and 265 is just 0.8% - within the supposed 1% tolerance. But clearly the car didn’t like it.

In any event, DO NOT use the 225/40R19 Front and 265/35R19 Rear with the F30 xDrive.

225/40-19, dia. 663mm
255/35-19, dia. 661mm (0.3% shorter than front tire)
265/35-19, dia. 669mm (0.9% taller than front tire)

The difference between 225/40 and 265/35 is very close to 1%.

Hi all

Sorry for activating this feed again but I'm new to this and in of need abit of help with tire sizes for my xdrive.

I have a bmw f30 xdrive

I'm running at the minute

235/35/19 8.5inch et35 Front
255/35/19 10inch et40 Rear
Causing no issues as of yet but want this set up right as it is a +2% diameter at the minute and Iknow it needs to be within 1%


Iknow these tyres are incorrect so I tryed changing to 265/30/19 on the rear. The xdrive system did not react good to this causes lag through 1st/2nd/3nd gear. This diameter is -0.08%. then put back to my original set up I bought the wheels with.

I'm now thinking of trying 225/40/19 on the front and keeping the rear 255/35/19 on the rear. Will this set up be better? This is -0.04% diameter

for rim sizes 19x8.5 +35 and 19x10 +40, 235/40/19 and 265/35/19 is the best size combo for x-drive.

I just checked that , it states that is -1.5% diameter so it's not within the 1%

At the minute I've no lights on dash but just want to make sure it's running correctly and don't want no damage to transmission

You are doing the tire size calculations wrong. 235/40R19 vs 265/35R19 are 0.4% different front to back, not 1.5%.

If I was to just change the front to 225/40/19 to use do think that would be a problem? And leave the back at 255/35/19. It reads -0.04 in diameter.

Or would I be better with the other option?

Would Save me changing all 4 tyres as all are basically brand new Hankooks installed

225/40R19 front 255/35R19 rear is the factory option staggered setup. It's what my 340i came with. It's the absolute best size/option for keeping front-back the closest dia to each other for xDrive.

Was that on a 8.5 alloy on the front and 9.5 on the back? Just cause I'm running a 8.5 on front 10inch on the rear just want to make sure I get this right🙂 will these these tyre sizes be fine?

Each tire has a recommended wheel width range from the tire manufacturer. Look on TireRack website and in the Specs tab for each tire that is listed. Just make sure that the width of your wheels falls within that range.

Also listed is the actual measured diameter of that particular model tire. If you have an XDrive you want your front to rear measured tire diameters to be 0.2" or less different to keep within the XDrive specification. Otherwise you risk damaging a $4,000+ XDrive Transfer Case.

Do NOT use an Internet calculator because they are based on sidewall markings which are not accurate enough. They are only ballparks from the tire manufacturer

19x8.5 rear

10" rear is really wide, and is for 255 - 285. 255 would be stretched, 265 or 275 is ideal for 10".

Wondering what is the reason... The only thing I would be suspicious of is the small overall diameter, but you are not the first one going this way...

Absolutely true. The real-world differences between the tires of the same size are sometimes shockingly big and can be easily spotted by the naked eye on a few meters distance.

Thanks for everyone's input. Is it possible to run two different tyre brands front to rear if the diameter is right? Or does it have to have the same brand on all 4 tyres?
