Dashboard vent system

Anyone have a drawing of how the vents and valves are laid out in the F30 dash?

When go to defrost, I hear a valve moving and then there is a whistling sound and no air coming out. If I cycle it a few times it may work, but that's about a 20% success rate. Otherwise, as I start driving down the road, it eventually pops open and the defroster works.

Trying to find out where the valves are and if maybe anyone else has dealt with this. Searching the forums and Google-Fu have been weak for me on this.

Really would like some help.

Thanks.

When I have carried out a diagnostic through ISTA on my IHKA unit, it states the "air distribution flap motor has failed to reach 0 degrees. When I look at schematics of the unit, none of the flaps are referred to as "air distribution flap". Does anyone have a clue as to what flap ISTA is talking about?

Sparking this back up as I haven't been able to find a solution yet. The vent appears to stick at some point and not fully close to allow the exchange to blow air up through the defrost. I have attached two videos that you can hear as I press the defrost and then auto button.

Anyone have any ideas? When I had the glove box out, I could see the valve moving up and down. Not sure how much it is supposed to go but it looked like it was doing the full run.

Any hell would be great.

Number 6 actuator could be the one at fault here. They are all the same part No. IIRC, if you can take one off and swap it with the defroster actuator, it might determine if that flap is operating correctly. ISTA does have a diagnostic mode in which you can operate each flap, it will tell you what angle the flap is at and if it has reached its required position. It's probably worth doing that before destroying your hands trying to get these things out.

How do you get to the diagnostic mode in ista? Do you have a link to the process or manual or anything I can use by chance? Thank you!!

Its within the IHKA ECU functions which you access from the cars ECU tree.

No luck yet. Bought a small dash heater from Advanced Auto until I can get it sorted.

Hoping someone can let me know how to access the vents without disassembling the dash. Glove box and/or digital display? I need to get this figured out ASAP...
