I’ve noticed a knocking sound at idle and under load at around 2k-3k rpm. The noise seems to go away under any other conditions weather that be no load rpm or rpm greater than 3k-4k under load. I honestly don’t know how long the noise has been there, I just remember getting in my car after not driving it for a weekend and noticing the sound. I would really appreciate any help on tracking down the noise as I’ve put quite a bit of money into the car. I sent the oil to be analyzed but that won’t be back for another week and I want to make sure I could still drive the car. The noise is best heard in the wheel wells, mainly the passenger side, can be heard from the top but I couldn’t hear it under the car. I am going to try and attach a few videos that I got of the noise. video 1 video 2

If it’s that low thumping noise, it doesn’t sound like rod knock/spun bearing to me. Always hard to tell from a video though.

Check the oil filter for copper bits. Not having them doesn’t mean it’s good, but if they are there I’d stop driving it.

When I changed the oil there where no copper flakes but there was a small amount of aluminum (I think, shiney non magnetic). But it didn’t seem like much. I did notice that the magnetic on my drain plug was missing but I don’t know if it came off inside or out side the pan.

Its a 170k been driven to and from Kansas to Texas. So really only highway miles. Everything’s been kept up with, such as oil changes gasket changes and anything else that starts going wrong with the car. I put a downpipe and intercooler on it and have been running stage 2 for probably 20k or so miles. Its never been beat on when the oil wasn’t up to temp. I was driving it today and notice the noise has changed to just 2500-3000 rpm and if the exhaust valve is open it gets quieter.(might be from the louder exhaust, but it really does sound like it’s not as loud.)

Cant see any specks in the housing or filter. However I did do an oil change about 1500 miles ago so it hasn’t been too long, probably around a month.

Looks good. But this could mean that a bearing hasn't spun. Monitor the bottom knock and perhaps get ready to have the bearings serviced.

at3090, a small percentage of N55 engines in 2013 F30 vehicles were affected by excessive connecting rod bearing wear. The symptoms appeared very early - prior to 30K miles. At idle speed, one could hear a faint "clickity-clack" sequence.

Your vehicle has 170K miles (congratulations!). At this mileage, any number of normal wear items could be involved.

Is there a shop in your area that can perform proper oil analysis?

I have mailed off a black stone oil analysis but with Christmas and new years it’s taken a while to get back. But it should be coming back here pretty soon. To me under rpm load it doesn’t much like a knock but I really can’t tell. I got a video from the engine bay driving but it’s hard to hear over the regular engine noise and induction noise. I’ll post it below so you maybe you could check it out.

This was about 2 weeks ago but the noise hasn’t changed.
I had someone else look at it in person and they also thought it didn’t sound much like rod knock, and that it seemed to be too frequent.

Edit - this was with my phone strapped down by the turbo area, where it seems to be the most prevalent

I got my oil analysis back and it shows zero issues at all so maybe the noise is normal and I just recently noticed it. It hasn’t changed at all in the past month

This is a remarkable oil report for a vehicle which has 170K miles.

At the same time, this noise might be normal for this mileage which means parts which are subject to rotational friction have been worn out and tolerances are simply greater than specs.

I think if it changes I’ll take it to a shop that has better equipment than my long screwdriver to get it diagnosed
