On a whim checked bmw.com/update today and it has a new update to the HU/BT: UPD09041.BIN. The release notes as always are light but do mention an improvement to connected drive.

I tried to update but the update fails (doesn't start actually) as it states its not possible on this vehicle. I assume I don't have the right release of TB/MB/HB.

I have MB-001.045.022, TB-001.046.032 and HB-001.062.032 on an iD 4 HU.

If anyone tries and is successful that would at least confirm the file is not corrupt on the servers.

It shouldn't... The last update was UPD9032.BIN for my '16 428i. That updated to the versions I mention in the OP. If you open the .BIN file with a byte editor, the embedded XML doc seems to allude to my current versions as being one of the pre-requisites... that's what makes it puzzling.

However, the PDF release notes are uncharacteristically short, again compared to UPD9032.

FYI, I have a "funny" MY16 428i GC in that it has iDrive 4. Just to add to the background information. Not quite LCI but has some interesting items such as no LED under the AC controls, which supposedly was deleted on the LCIs.

The other clue that this *should* be the right firmware for my HU is in the readme file:

Notes After installing the software update in the vehicle, the current software version will be displayed: ▷ TB 001.063.040 & MB 001.062.040 & HB 001.062.032

So it seems to be designed to update TB and MB to the 1.06x.xxx branch of code. Doesn't apply to the TB/MB 002, 003, 004, 005, 006 codes branches.

At any rate, if anyone is successful I welcome the input!

Funny, I updated my software just a few weeks ago (as this is a new car)... oh well...

According to the pdf 09041 should apply to my car which is currently on 003.003.001 for both MN and TN. Will grab the update and see if it installs.

Interesting... my copy of the 09041 PDF doesn't state *any* dependencies or detailed per-firmware notes as did the PDF for 09032. As a matter of fact, the PDF is only 3 pages long!

Apologies, I was looking at the update PDF for 0581 which is what applies to my car and which mentions 003.003.001, saw this thread and without thinking it was the same.

Anyone else? I'm at a loss of to what the issue is. I'm assuming a corrupt file but BMW's side keeps dispensing this version for my VIN.

It looks like you are already on a higher version which is why it won’t update. I had this with the previous update, wouldn’t update and after I checked what I had was newer, my car had been into the dealer for some work and they had updated it to something a lot newer than available for download.

My 16 f30 with id5 is the same. wont update.

Strange. the car was last time in dealership in march 18, so they've updated the car to

TB-005.002.001
MB-005.002.001

If you open the file UPD09041.bin with hex editor, you can see the release date for the firmware was in August 18, so effectively it should be newer firmware then mine.

Unless BMW has updates backwards, or I might be missing another update inbetween in order to update, I honestly dont know whats wrong!

My car was never updated after I bought it last December. Don't know what these numbers mean but it seems the newer the software the smaller the number.

My number is 006.001.044

No the higher the numbers the newer, certainly was the case for me, I had 003.003.001 and went up to 003.255.080 for some of the modules

No, I have lower than what is in the .BIN bundle. My current firmware is MB-001.045.022, TB-001.046.032.

The update brings that to MB-001.062.040 and TB-001.063.040, per the PDF notes.

HB though stays the same at 001.062.032. I wonder if the HU is confused and sees that HB is identical and refuses to update. I've considered doing a roll back to the older version on the HDD and then skipping direct to this version. But will do so as last resort.

The software update web address has now changed from BMW.com/update to https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html which by the way now needs the full 17 digit VIN instead of the previous last 7 digits.

In addition, the previous 9041 bin file is no longer available for my 2018 430i. It now shows the older 9032 bin file as the latest available update file. Looks like they pulled 9041.

Awesome find, thank you. Believe it or not I think this is progress... Getting the full VIN may more accurately allow BMW to push the right update. And the fact they pulled 9041 points perhaps to me not being crazy!
